DAP's 'divide and rule' strategy against PAS could dissolve the political cooperation within Pakatan Rakyat, said acting Dewan Ulama chief Mahfodz Mohamed.

This is because the DAP's attacks against PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang could split the PAS leadership and this was a factor in the dissolving of Pakatan Rakyat in Sabah and Sarawak.

"Now the DAP has given a signal that they will interfere in the PAS elections by saying that they will make a decision on their position in Pakatan after the PAS muktamar.

"This is a clear interference so that the delegates will choose a new PAS leadership which is pro-DAP," he said at the Dewan Ulama muktamar in Gombak today.

Mahfodz said the situation reminded him of the conditions of the tahaluf siyasi (political cooperation) which were outlined by the PAS Syura Council in 2009.

"DAP's provocation could cancel the tahaluf siyasi between the Islamist party and the socialist party," he warned.

Clashes started with the Kajang Move

Mahfodz in his speech also admitted that Pakatan, which was formed in 2008, had experienced clashes which started with the Kajang Move, leading up to the replacement of the Selangor menteri besar as well as the implementation of hudud in Kelantan.

He also reprimanded PAS members on their failure in giving their loyalty to the struggle of Islam especially when there are issues between PAS and its allies.

“Loyalty must be given to the Islamist party.

“This is where the ulama play a role in educating PAS members to ensure that they do not deviate from the path which will only delay us from achieving victory,” he said.

Mahfodz is not alone in telling members to place their loyalty to PAS over other parties.

In an obvious swipe at those who are pro-Pakatan Rakyat, PAS spiritual leader Haron Din also reminded party members about the concept of loyalty.

"Loyalty must be given to the PAS leadership and not to other parties, in a political cooperation," he said in his opening speech at the Dewan Ulama muktamar in Gombak today.
