Unity minister: Religion not for jokes, probe Umno leader

National Unity Minister Aaron Ago Dagang wants authorities to investigate Sepang Umno Noorazli Said over a joke involving a fake religious verse, a Catholic priest and a nun.

This comes amid continued uproar against the grassroots politician, despite him offering an apology for his remarks made at the Umno general assembly.

"Religion is not for jokes," Aaron (above) said bluntly in a statement today.

He urged authorities to investigate Noorazli under Sections 298 and 298A of the Penal Code for wounding religious feelings and causing disharmony on grounds of religion.

He also called for a probe under the Communications and Multimedia Act. The party had livestreamed Noorazli's remarks and those of other Umno delegates debating at the AGM.

Noorazli told the joke while praising Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s political wisdom during the party’s general assembly.

It depicted a priest touching a nun’s thigh while driving and purportedly linked its punchline to Psalm 129, although the quoted line does not appear in the biblical passage.

Noorazli (above) yesterday offered an apology over his remarks if they hurt the feelings of any Christians.

He also acknowledged today that the Psalm he quoted was fake.

However, prior to his apology, Noorazli had defended himself, saying the joke he made was widely circulated.
