Electoral reforms pressure group Bersih has warned that the authorities must come clean on the 1MDB controversy or risk a mass street protest.

Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah said the public demands clarity and if they are not convinced, they will hit the streets to demand for answers.

"We will want to see a response first and how they are going to present their investigations related to 1MDB.

"Bersih 4.0 will not be discounted if the investigations are not impartial," she told a press conference today, according to Star Online.

She added that Bersih will give the authorities until the end of August to show the results of their investigations.

Presently, a special task force comprising the police, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and Bank Negara was established to probe allegations that close to US$700 million were channeled into Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's personal account.

The allegation was made by Wall Street Journal, who claimed to have sighted documents by Malaysian investigators which described the money trail in detail.

The attorney-general said on Saturday that documents have been seized from SRC International Sdn Bhd, Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd and Ihsan Perdana Sdn Bhd. All three companies are linked to 1MDB.

Apart from this, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and the National Audit Department is probing 1MDB as well.

1MDB, owned by the Finance Ministry, is struggling to repay its RM42 billion in debt, which is partially guaranteed by Putrajaya.

In view of the investigations, Maria said Najib, who is also Finance Minister, should take leave until the probes are completed.

Najib had accused the WSJ report has " political sabotage " and blamed former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad of masterminding the elaborate plot.
