NEP has little to show but this poor boy

YOURSAY ‘A case of a simple theft, used by political agents to create mischief.’

Low Yat brawler 'shocked' over aftermath

P Dev Anand Pillai: From the looks of the youth (Shahrul Anwar Abdul Aziz), he seems a little lost and not very sure on how to react.

What we see here is a suspected thief being hailed as a hero, not a youth who should be worried about his future and making efforts to improve himself so that he could be employed.

As a nation of 58 years, we are still far from being a united people. It is only for purposes of propaganda that we show the world our so-called united front.

R10: Let the police deal with the situation - it is clear who started the Low Yat fracas. The blind reaction, no matter who is at fault, is the one I am really worried about, especially when different races are involved.

The authorities and the community in general (not just the police) must do something concrete to prevent this from happening again.

Ericomc: All youths make mistakes. But these seven youths (who damaged a mobile phone shop) were definitely committing a violent crime to legitimise their small mistake with the encouragement of certain irresponsible groups.

And they nearly succeeded in turning that small mistake into a racial issue of unimaginable proportion.

Ferdtan: The lawyer who raised Shahrul Anwar’s hands in front of the press photographers was milking the clueless young man for cheap publicity. What a shameless act.

He was obviously prodding him to show bravado and defiance in public. We wonder whether this lawyer, Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz, has Shahrul Anwar’s interest at heart.

Whose case is it - the suspect’s or the lawyer’s?

Dont Just Talk: Lawyer Khairul Azam said his client was just a 20-year-old youth who sometimes made mistake.

He should tell this to the innocent motorist whose car was trampled, windscreen smashed, and was badly assaulted and beaten up for no apparent reason.

Even Shahrul Anwar's parents chose to cover their faces in shame, knowing that their son and his accomplices were the cause of the riot at Plaza Low Yat.

Wira: Khairul Azam, why are you raising the hands of the alleged thief as if to celebrate victory? Shahrul Anwar looked confused while his parents apparently covered their faces in shame.

Ahmet Al Tarabulshit: A team of lawyers would be defending the alleged thief? All on pro bono ? Well, well. This is very interesting. Why do I smell something fishy here?

Bringon14: And it does not help that the president of the Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM) entered the fray by saying that it is inherent in the culture of Chinese business people to swindle others.

The nitwit is a datuk, to boot. What magnitude of idiots are there in this country?

Ratbatblue: A simple theft used as an excuse by political agents to create mischief - a very dangerous game indeed.

Why were there derogatory statements made against another race and also racist chants? This is a typical example of trying to strike fear among the minority races.

The police should come down hard on those who used the media to incite the public, and also on certain "rights" groups, whose very existence depended on such incidents.

MA: I sincerely hope all turns out well. There is no need for vengeance and hatred. Sadly, Shahrul Anwar seems to be the end-product of 42 years of NEP (New Economic Policy).

Umno has got nothing to show but this poor boy.

Anonymous_1421406986: As a concerned citizen, I asked myself this morning: why does this country continue to be divided by race, language and religion after close to 60 years of independence?

The race card is being played by every political party in this country to keep us perpetually divided.

Yes, on a public platform they talk about a united Malaysia and how the whole world is wonder-struck by our unity and peace, despite our cultural differences.

However, they never have failed to talk about defending their race, language and religion in AGMs and private meetings.

Every race-based political party is guilty of this drama. Look at the policies that have been put together, from the time Dr Mahathir Mohamad led the country. Even today as a former prime minister, he keeps affiliation with a racist NGO.

Mahathir should be a role model for racial unity. However, when one reads his writings, they tell a different story.

I have definitely come to one conclusion - that Mahathir has paid scant attention to racial unity. The woes of the country are on him, and traced to him.

Vijay47: Shahrul Anwar, you are a youth who have made a mistake and I am glad you have realised it. Nevertheless, you still have a court hearing to face and nobody knows what the outcome will be.

In the meantime, I would suggest that you uplift your potential and one good way would be to do well in bowling.

That would be a mitigating factor, should you unfairly be found guilty and could earn you a lesser sentence. It has happened before though, and in that case, the charge was only rape.

By the way, getting a Mara scholarship is a given for you. You could take up property management and might even be sent to Australia.
