In light of the Court of Appeal's decision today that Sarawak re-delineation exercise is valid, Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah has urged Malaysians from all walks of life to participate in the Bersih 4.0 rally on Aug 29.

She said the decision would result in the continued abuse by the Election Commission (EC) with gerrymandering and make the outcome of the 14th general elections a foregone conclusion.

Maria ( photo ) said the re-delineation exercise would now proceed to Sabah and then to peninsular Malaysia.

"All Malaysians who wants to keep their right to elect their government rather than having it chosen by the EC must come out in full force for the rally on Aug 29 .

"We must show public outrage and unwavered determination to protect our democratic rights," she added.

With the pre-determined election outcome following abuse of the re-delineation exercise, Maria expressed that the expectation of a clean government is absolutely impossible now.

"Malaysians can expect more prime ministerial corruption with cases like 1MDB, Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) and so forth, and a much bleaker economic outlook.

"Malaysians should stand up and be counted and be there for 34 hours with us to show our outrage," she said in reaction to the outcome of the appeal by the EC.

Johor to mobilise

Meanwhile, Bersih4Johor ( photo ), a coalition of NGOs from the southern state supporting Bersih, said it will be organising a series of events to help mobilise people ahead of the rally.

This includes a series of flash mobs, ceramah, roadshows and forums in Johor Bharu, Segamat, Muar, Batu Pahat and Kluang.

"We encourage all citizens who love this country to make a very small sacrifice.

“Find your own way to Kuala Lumpur on the Aug 29 by 2pm. Bring your own tents or sleeping bags to stay overnight until midnight of Aug 31, altogether 34 hours.

"This is a very small price to pay to show that we love our country and we want to have  clean elections, clean government and the right to dissent so that we can save our economy," it said in a statement.
