Fresh bid by students to 'occupy' Parliament fails

University students failed in their attempt last night to resume their protest in front of Parliament as the police blocked the entrance road to the building.

This forced them to return to go back to the Jinjiang police detention centre to continue with their protest against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and to camp there in support of their comrades under detention.

A group of about 20 students Calling themselves 'Gerakan Mahasiswa Selamatkan Negara' (Student Movement to Save the Country) marched about 1.5km from Bank Negara to Parliament Square on Monday, calling for Najib to resign .

Seventeen of them were arrested on Tuesday night, as they camped outside the gates to Parliament House, in a crackdown by the police.

Protest organising group #Langkahsiswa coordinator Muhammad Luqman Nul Hakim told Malaysiakini today that eight police patrol cars awaited the students as they arrived at the crossroad to Parliament last night to continue with their protest.

Luqman said the police warned the students they would be arrested if they did not retreat, but the police did not state on what grounds they would be arrested.

Since the police refused to negotiate with the students, he said, they left the area about midnight and went back to the Jinjiang police detention centre.

Asked whether the students planned to go back Parliament again, Luqman said they would discuss their strategies before announcing their next move. However, he did not rule out going back to the Parliament complex tonight.

Neither students nor police patrol cars were seen during a checkout around the Parliament area this morning.

Meanwhile, a court review on the remand of the 17 students and activists is slated to be heard by the High Court in Kuala Lumpur at 3.30pm today.

Luqman said he was informed that if the court agrees with the counsel for the students and activists that the remand order was not reasonable, the 17 would most likely be released by today.
