COMMENT Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak will be facing a corruption inquiry in the United States, according to The New York Times .

My question is: So what if he is sent to prison?

If this ever happened, Najib would be the first prime minister of Malaysia to be charged, and perhaps even imprisoned, for corruption overseas.

The news will hit the headlines throughout the world. And being Malaysians, we will have lots of explanation to do whenever the subject is brought up.

It is not that we like our country’s reputation to be marred by one man, but life has to go on.

The nation has to move on, even if Najib had to face the possibility of incarceration in New York, or anywhere else in the world.

However, if he has nothing to hide, he should not avoid the forthcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly.

What goes around, comes around

What if this were an international conspiracy? Or, is it another plot involving the United States of America, whose President Barack Obama is himself a golf buddy of Najib?

Perhaps, it is, as some would allege, being masterminded by the Jews?

We have seen how, when former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was sent to jail for five years, and when he raised this theory of a conspiracy against him, he was rubbished.

Now, see who is saying that an international conspiracy is being hatched to topple the Malaysian government.

It looks like Veteran Umno secretary Mustapha Yaakub is asking the same questions asked by many when Altantuya Shariibuu was murdered by two police operatives, with no apparent motive, but who were subsequently sentenced to death for killing the former Mongolian model.

Although Putrajaya has denied that the two were not Najib’s personal bodyguards, the question of how they finally got involved in the murder case has not been adequately answered until today, especially the motive of the murder.

When you look at present context, Matthias Chang and Khairuddin Abu Hassan ( photo ) are not directly linked with former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, except that Chang was a former lawyer close to Mahathir. But, so what?

Yet, why is Mustapha asking these questions, and I quote: “What is the relation between Khairuddin and Chang's mission with (former prime minister) Dr Mahathir Mohamad's statement that (Prime Minister) Najib (Abdul Razak) might be arrested if he travels overseas?

"Is Mahathir behind these efforts? If that is true, why is it only Khairuddin who was arrested? If Khairuddin's actions are considered a danger to the country, then are the people backing Khairuddin not dangerous?"

Does Mustapha mean that, by Khairuddin lodging his complaints, even if we assume that he was using fake documents, he and even Mahathir should be arrested? I don’t think so.

If Khairuddin had used fake documents, he would have to face the music himself. However, unless the authorities he complained to reveal that he had provided them with fake documents, there is simply no reason to detain him for six days.

The main actors

As we know, the complainant Khairuddin is a former Umno division deputy chairperson, and not even a member of the Opposition, although fingers are kept pointing at DAP publicist Tony Pua.

And the organisations to which Khairuddin has complained to are bona fide government agencies in Switzerland, Hong Kong, Singapore, United Kingdom and the US.

They are like the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC) in Malaysia, except that they, like the ICAC in Hong Kong, are known to be more independent than the MACC.

Therefore, how then can these investigative bodies be working for a Jewish agenda or trying to topple the Malaysian government, as alleged by certain quarters?

Just because Najib is now being investigated by a US Grand Jury, does that mean that Obama has backstabbed him?

My point is this: stop all the illogical arguments that there is an international conspiracy to topple the Malaysian government.

If Najib is found to be guilty of corruption, let him spend his years in the US, but our life as a nation has to go on. After all, there is a proverbial saying, “You reap what you sow”.

We cannot, just because of one person, allow the country to be destroyed, can we?
