Jamal likely to be released tonight, says aide
Malay NGO coalition chairperson Jamal Md Yunos is expected to be released from the Dang Wangi district police headquarters this evening.
"He is still in Dang Wangi now. We're hoping he'll be released by 8pm, but he should be out around 6pm," his secretary Duranny Izam told Malaysiakini .
Jamal was arrested last night at the Ampang Jaya IPD after giving a statement and taken to Dang Wangi IPD under Section 105 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC).
Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief Zainuddin Ahmad yesterday said Jamal's arrest was to prevent offences from happening.
"It is regarding his statement that there is going to be a riot on Petaling Street," Zainuddin said in a text message to reporters.
Section 105 of the CPC confers the police powers to detain anyone, without warrant or court order, to prevent a seizable offence from being committed.
On Wednesday, Jamal warned of a possible protest and riot in Petaling Street today if the authorities failed to act on traders who sold counterfeit goods.
However, he released a statement yesterday saying he is not organising the protest which was supposed to take place today.
The planned protest comes 10 days after the Sept 16 rally to “defend Malay dignity”, which saw scuffles between police and protestors, who demanded to enter traditional Chinese trading area Petaling Street.
Two police personnel and several protestors were injured, while two protestors were arrested and tested positive for drugs.
The Malaysia Day rally was to counter the Bersih 4 rally last month. The rally called for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s resignation amid corruption allegations, and was predominantly attended by ethnic Chinese protestors.
