Najib's grandstanding not reflecting reality for refugees

YOURSAY | ‘What about those Myanmar refugees who are still not given recognition here?’

Najib: Malaysia to accept 3,000 Syrian refugees

SteveOh: What will happen to these 3,000 refugees from Syria? Will they be housed, given money, etc, or will they suffer the fate of those UN-registered refugees living in misery?

If they are given special treatment, what about the other refugees who get no such help?

The problem with a lack of consistent policy is political grandstanding tends not to be commensurate with the subsequent treatment of refugees when the journalists move on to other stories.

And what about Malaysia's own homeless street refugees?

CQ Muar: PM Najib Razak, you can't even handle the local problems of the Chinese Malaysians, who had been constantly referred to as ‘pendatangs’ by those bigots and racists, and here you're showing the world your sense of humanity in alleviating the Syrian migrants' dilemma?

Is this another tactical ploy to show the world what an exemplary leader you are with such ‘compassion’, or is this act part of your strategy to mitigate those multiple guilts you're now bearing?

Going beyond, perhaps your scheming mind even envisage the 3,000 Syrians could come in handy, akin to those in East Malaysia, to ensure more votes in readiness for the next general election?

Justine Gow: Someone is busy overseas, trying to be an international statesman. But he may be in for a shocking surprise when he returns home.

You can't have everything all the times, especially so when you are not on the side of what is right. Sepandai-pandai tupai melompat, akhirnya jatuh ke tanah juga.

For helping the Syrian refugees, he is going to receive a mega donation, this time from a generous but cannot be named individual from the European Union (EU).

Anonymous#007: As much as I sympathise with the refugees, Malaysia's legal and constitutional infrastructure is not transparent or equitable enough for the country to take in refugees from Muslim extremist countries without jeopardising or worsening the plight of the Christian, Buddhist, Hindu and Sikh minorities in Malaysia.

Malaysia is already seeing an acceleration of Muslim extremism in recent years, most of which have been executed with impunity and immunity.

And, Malaysia is already seen as a transit point for Muslim extremists from Syria and other countries heading to spread terror to this part of the world. Would we now be 'legalising' this by accepting the 'refugees'?

The Aylan Kurdi tragedy is drawing on the conscience of good-hearted people, but let us not forget his father has allegedly been implicated as one of the 'refugee traffickers'.

Anonymous #13114320: Given an option, I doubt those 3,000 would want to come here. Here would be a living hell for them in long run.

What about those Myanmar refugees who are still not given recognition here after so many years? These Syrians will suffer the same fate.

Citizen No 26: We have enough domestic problems and also the issues of existing refugees remaining unresolved due to weak political will and poor leadership.

The existing refugees from Burma, Africa and Middle East are in many thousands. Yet the PM announced that he would bring in 3,000 Syrian refugees. IS terrorists may take the opportunity to slip in as Syrian refugees.

My advice to the PM is to solve the problems of the existing refugees first by giving them work permits so that they can contribute positively to the economic development of our country instead of being prosecuted and harassed by our authorities.

If this is not resolved, the PM will create more problems by having first-class refugees, second-class refugees and third-class refugees, leading to more chaos in our beloved country.

Slumdog: "For it is only when we transcend the silos of race and faith ... that we will act as our better selves.” Once again, listen to the emotive and pragmatic words of Najib on the world stage.

The height of hypocrisy and insincerity from someone who at home promotes and implements racist policies, curtails religious freedom and remains silent against those who make racist and seditious comments against the Chinese, Christians and other non-Malay, non-Muslim groups.

The Analyser: Three thousand refugees in three years. Such compassion, such generosity, very Islamic.

Now it will be interesting to see how many Syrians who really understand what Islam is about will take up this generous offer.

Rose: As a member of UN and a middle-income country, we should support the Syrian refugees and accept them with an open heart.

Swipenter: By the way, where have all the Bosnian refugees gone to? Back to Christian Europe instead of staying in Malaysia?
