PAS: 'Hasty' path to Pakatan Harapan may break up PKR

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has cautioned PKR that it could face a similar break-up like the Islamic party following the "hasty" formation of Pakatan Harapan.

Tuan Ibrahim appeared to be referring to reports that the PKR leadership was now at loggerheads over the formation of Pakatan Harapan.

This was after 25 PKR central leadership council members reportedly signed a petition demanding that party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail hold an emergency meeting on the premature creation of the new opposition coalition.

"To PKR, which is still a partner to PAS, we hope that there will not be a break-up as its seeds can already be seen.

"PAS prays that PKR will not suffer the same fate as PAS. Internal break-up in a party due to outside interference by those with vested interests will weaken the opposition's strength," Tuan Ibrahim said in a statement today.

He said this in reference to the formation of Parti Amanah Negara, a splinter from PAS, and reiterated that PAS would not work with the new political party.

On Sept 22, Wan Azizah ( photo ) announced the formation of Pakatan Harapan, which comprises PKR, DAP and Amanah. PAS refused to join the pact.

"The hasty action to form Pakatan Harapan shows the rakyat the self-interestsof certain quarters that was the cause of Pakatan Rakyat's break-up," Tuan Ibrahim said.

He said that PAS could never work with DAP for what it had done to the Islamic party, nor could it work with Amanah, which is actively recruiting its members from PAS and taking over some of the PAS regional headquarters.

‘PAS will hold on to all seats it contested’

He also reiterated that PAS would hold on to all the seats it had contested in the last general election and that Amanah contesting in any of them would only give Umno a lifeline.

"There may be some who claim that PAS candidates cannot win as Chinese voters will not give their votes. But can Amanah win if Malays do not give their votes, particularly the PAS members and supporters?" he asked.

Tuan Ibrahim added that ultimately, DAP stood to benefit the most, and he went on to describe the DAP leadership as "desperate" and "uncompromising".

DAP has actively supported the formation of Amanah after its fallout with PAS.

Tuan Ibrahim said it remained to be seen how voters would react to DAP's manoeuvrings in areas where the party was assisted by PAS in the last general election.
