IGP should probe allegation, not the person who reveals it

YOURSAY | ‘What is being done about the information provided in the SD?’

IGP defends move to call Americk over 'serious' SD

Vijay47: Considering the issues that you are so concerned with, Khalid Abu Bakar, it is evident that you have forgotten that you are the inspector-general of police (IGP), an office thrust on you by the Agong himself to protect the nation and bring crooks and sundry vermin to book.

This lapse of memory could be due to your alleged craving to serve political masters, or some neurological malady; either way, you are unfit to hold the top position in the police force, not with your snarling twittish ways.

You seem free in using words like "run away" and "fled" which, apart from revealing Charles Morais's animal instinct to survive, would be more appropriate to describe you and your flight from duty and responsibility.

You now threaten lawyer Americk Sidhu on the grounds that the contents of the statutory declaration (SD) are serious. If such be the case, why are you not investigating the "serious" allegations?

CHKS: Indeed, if it is damn serious, then you should investigate the claim itself, not the person who reveals it. If the claim is proven false, only then should you go after the person who reveals it.

Gaji Buta: Why so concerned about the information alleged to be withheld? What is being done about the information already provided in the SD? Not sufficient to start an investigation?

Monty: If at all the IGP is adamant that he must interview someone, I would think that the former attorney-general (AG) Abdul Gani Patail would be best person to answer all the IGP's queries, and for that matter many Malaysians are also keen to know just what the heck is happening.

Did he or did he not work on those charge sheets? Actually I think the IGP himself would want the answers. Why is he looking in all the wrong places?

P Dev Anand Pillai: Come on, Mr IGP, it is client-attorney privilege as provided for by Section 126 of the Evidence Act 1950. Get Charles, not Americk.

The police seem to be making the same mistake again and again. The only way to put a stop to the rot is for the people to rise up but unfortunately, the ruling elite know that Malaysians are not made of that mettle so they continue with their ways and we the people bear the brunt of a complete failure of the system of checks and balances in this country.

Benghazi: Mr IGP, we know you are very powerful while Najib Abdul Razak is PM. A lawyer helps a client to put his SD in the proper legal format, employing the appropriate legal jargon. The actual content must come from the client.

Stop harassing the lawyer who is only doing his job. Go after the hardcore criminals who steal from the rakyat. It's important that the IGP gets his priority right. The taxpayers are paying your salary.

2Kali5: Now watch out, all you commissioners of oaths and lawyers. You stand to be hauled up for attesting to your clients' SDs.

1malaysia2perak3katak: Next time there is a murder case, question the lawyer first, and only then the suspect. This is only possible in Bolehland.

Aries46: The IGP seems to spew a lot of intimidating sounding words such as “coward”, “ran away”, “serious SD”, “Section 202", “Section 124L” and so on but he fails to elaborate what exactly is Charles' wrongdoing that has so enraged him.

Charles appears to have come with a specific purpose in respect of his late brother Kevin's murder, made his SD and held his press conference and allegedly left by the Causeway openly and not as a fugitive or as a wanted person or criminal.

If he had committed a serious crime, why was he allowed to leave the country? Or did he evade the police dragnet?

Nevertheless, if his crime is really serious I'm sure the Interpol will be able to bring him in, provided the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has the justification to drag him in.

Negarawan: “As for Charles, we don't know when... We have already called for him but he has run away, and we don't know when we are going to make contact with him and get him to assist (investigations),” said Khalid.

Jho Low allegedly ran away with billions of the rakyat’s money, but did you chase him?

My Opinion: In accusing him of "running away", Charles can sue you for defamation. The proper words should be "he has left the country".

You have defamed him by inferring that he is running away from the law. This is defamatory.

Tholu: Mr IGP, if you are investigating Charles and Americk under Section 202 of the Penal Code for withholding information pertaining to a crime, then you are implying that the crime that Charles insinuated in his SD is indeed true and was actually committed by certain people in power.

On the other hand, if such a crime was not committed, then there cannot be any withholding of information on a non-existent crime and the investigation under Section 202 would appear foolish and senseless. So, which is which, Mr IGP?

Fair Play: The bird has flown, so what is the next best thing to do?

Go after the bird keeper.
