Anis Syafiqah and friends - young catalysts for a better M'sia

YOURSAY | 'They are ordinary people with extraordinary objectives.'

Anis Syafiqah in the eye of the storm at Tangkap MO1 rally

Headhunter: In spite of her fear, she's willing to make her commitment for a better Malaysia and take a personal risk. We must lift our heads to the young university student, for her courage to stand up for the rest of us.

Fear is what the present regime hopes to use to beat young people like her into submission. I see her potential as a future leader. Salute.

Worldly Wise: Hopefully, Anis Syafiqah will maintain her high ideals even after she leaves university. The country needs honest leaders who are in short supply, judging from the 1MDB dealings and the AG's inaction.

KO: There is nothing silly about Anis Syafiqah. She has taken the road less travelled. She will do just well. Life is not about just studies. It's about experiences. She has a clear head, clear principles. Thousands will give her a job if she wanted one. She can just put out a shout for help. At least 55 percent of Malaysians will help.

Mahsuri: The students have started the momentum but they are a highly vulnerable segment. The harassment of Anis Syafiqah and those like her will only intensify as the administration grows increasingly desperate.

Be brave, Anis Syafiqah, and do not despair, for you do not stand alone. Adult Malaysia - wake up. What are we waiting for? Is this the sort of bullying we want our youth to continue to be subjected to?

Is this the Malaysia we want to raise our children in? Sending their cybertroopers to harass a young girl on her mobile - sick and depraved people.

RM2.6 billion turkey haram: Malaysians salute you, Anis Syafiqah. An ordinary girl you claim to be, but your objective is extraordinary. Thanks very much for fighting on our behalf.

Sarawakian: A great nation at the crossroads always produces a leader that arouses the conscience of the people. Think of Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela.

Those of us sick and tired of the apathy of our politicians and citizens hope Anis Syafiqah and her 'robbed' speech may be that catalyst of change.

Dont just talk: With the rampant corruption in Malaysia and with '681 American Pies' wired into the MO1 personal accounts, which speaks volumes of poor leadership by example, the country is slowly but surely slipping into a comatose state.

At the end of the day, when Anis Syafiqah's children and grandchildren ask her, what did you and your generation do when you knew that Malaysia was corrupted to the core, Anis Syafiqah can proudly reply: I was there during the TangkapMO1 rally.

“The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws.” - Tacitus (senator and historian of the Roman Empire).

RR: We observed with appreciation that the police did not unduly harass the young students who were expressing their freedom of speech and action. Hope there will not be post-harassment by the authorities on the leaders of the rally.

LKY: MO1 is not stupid. If he arrested the student leaders, then he is going against all the student bodies and NGOs in the world. He will hasten his own demise. He has to plan his own exit graciously.

Boeyks: I spent Saturday afternoon in the hot sun walking the roads listening to the students because I think these students realise that something is wrong in this country that was named as corrupt by others, yet nothing happened.

MO1, AG, IGP, Bank Negara governor, ministers and all those who are defending the scandal, why don't you all prove to these students that you are not guilty in this scam of the century, instead of just making plain denials, or just keeping silent, or giving your side of the story without any substance?

Anonymous_1371458513: Anis Syafiqah, the rakyat is behind you, all the Umno MPs do not have one percent of your knowledge of what is right or wrong.

Negarawan: It is important to raise the level of awareness of the massive corruption behind MO1 in the rural areas of Malaysia, not the urban areas. Don't bring coals to Newcastle.

CQ Muar: As expected, Malaysian Official 1 will next order his henchmen and the police to either instil fear, threat or alternatively, offer "sweeteners" and incentives to deter Anis Syafiqah from further condemnation of MO1.

Very soon she is expected to purr like a cat, and shy away from her intended mission of 'demanding' the arrest of MO1. Such is the weakness of the kind of "student power" in this country ruled by the iron fist of a terror-leader, who does not know what dishonour and shame are all about.

The only ray of hope (for all Malaysians) lies in the hands of the US Department of Justice, which we pray will continue to pursue the case to the hilt, and eventually follow up with criminal charges and arrests of all those named.

Lone_star: In Bolehland, Soo Ewe Jin, a The Star columnist, says he flies the flag as there is freedom of speech.

But he failed to point out whether there is freedom after speech. For all her bravery, Cik Anis Syafiqah might be thinking of that when she fled after her speech. Hopefully, they will respect her freedom of speech.

Norman Fernandez: What has the demonstration achieved, except for letting off some pent-up anger? While one salutes her effort, at the end of the day it remains a failure, for the majority of students and the youth just shied away.

The fact that the majority of students stayed away, means it is a non-issue with them, and they are not bothered. In other countries, students were and are the agents of change and united in their cause.

That is not the case here. Elsewhere, students stood, remained and were unmoved until they achieved their aim. Their acts then made the ordinary people come out to stand together.

Here, it is a case of being present at 2pm at Sogo, march to Dataran Merdeka, listen to some speeches, spew up some words of protest and at 5pm - Balik. Just a day out. The government should not get into an unnecessary hissy fit and just allow it. For the end result is just the same.

Wg321: Mr Norman Fernandez. You are right to say demonstrations will achieve nothing except for letting off some pent-up anger if you are living in the 1960s and 1970s. In those days, news about student demonstrations could only be spread by leaflets printed from cyclostyle machines.

Today, thanks to the Internet, we have social media like Facebook, WhatsApp, WeChat, Internet forums, live streaming, YouTube, etc, where events and news can spread instantly. There is no need to have 20,000 students to be physically on the ground to demonstrate.

The 2,000-odd demonstrators on "TangkapMO1" have made a point. They have provoked discussion on the social media about 1MDBgate among the Malay Generation Y.

A time will come soon when the Malays will realise that the enemies of the Malay race are not from other races, but from within their own race, from those who practise kleptocracy, and where corruption is halal.

Fernandez is just like another dinosaur from Suhakam, Razali Ismail, who is against street demonstrations.

Dumbo: Norman Fernandez is nothing more than an armchair critic and many Malaysians can join his bandwagon. If what you see does not achieve its objective, then move forward and take the lead and contribute innovative ideas and galvanise the people to achieve success in such "street protests".

I applaud and salute you Anis Shafiqah, for taking the lead to stand up for justice and for the mock 'imprisonment of MO1". That takes a hell of a lot of courage. Bravo, Anis Syafiqah.

Rocky: Anis Syafiqah, I take my hat off to you. You will make a great leader someday.
