The late PAS spiritual leader Haron Din had told his family and compatriots to bury him in the US if he died while he was there, said Perlis PAS commissioner Mohd Shukri Ramli.

"The mandate was made as a precaution as this was the sixth time the deceased had undergone surgery," Shukri was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.

Shukri said Haron had made this known before he flew to the US on Sept 10.

Shukri added that funeral prayers will be held for Haron in Kangar, Perlis tonight.

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also confirmed in a posting on Twitter that Haron's family has decided to bury him in San Francisco.

"Just spoke to Haron's family. The family plans to bury him in San Francisco. The funeral prayers will be at Masjid An Nur there," Ahmad Zahid tweeted today.

Earlier, he had tweeted his condolences on the passing of Haron and said that the prime minister and himself had arranged for a jet to bring Haron's remains back to Malaysia.

Haron passed away today after he was earlier admitted to intensive care at Stanford University Hospital in the US.

The spiritual leader is understood to have been warded at Stanford in San Francisco, California several days ago over his prevailing heart condition.

In March he was admitted to Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur after complaining of chest pains.

Haron, aged 76, underwent an angiogram last Sept 10.

He joined PAS in 1974, and succeeded the late Nik Aziz Nik Mat as the party's spiritual leader in March 2015 following the latter's death.
