Seputeh MP Teresa Kok has reminded Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Abdul Rahman Dahlan of how an Umno leader had engaged in political vengeance but was eventually defeated in the 13th general election.

Kok said this in reference to Rahman's announcement that Putrajaya will blacklist companies that do business with the government but are found supporting the Bersih 5 rally.

"I wish to remind him that right thinking Malaysians will not accept politics of vengeance and it will be wise for him to learn from history - the Malacca experience," said Kok, who is DAP vice-chairperson.

Kok said in 2000, Malacca chief minister Mohd Ali Rustam's government had blacklisted 20 local contractors for supposedly supporting the opposition in the 1999 general election.

She added that the Malacca government at that time had also terminated the services of 21 state panel doctors and closed its fixed deposit accounts at two banks, whose employees were said to be pro-opposition.

"But did these Malays who became victims of Ali Rustam’s politics of vengeance became frightened and switch their support to BN or Umno? The answer is no.

"Look at what has happened to Ali Rustam?

"He was defeated in the Umno traditional stronghold of Bukit Katil in the 2013 general election and is today trying stay alive in politics by even becoming an appointed senator," she said.

Kok questioned if Abdul Rahman's statement had been endorsed by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and the cabinet.

She also asked how an "intelligent" person like Abdul Rahman, who is Kota Belud MP, could make such a proposal.

"He is an intelligent man but why has he made such undemocratic, extreme and unacceptable remarks which also reflects his primitive mentality?

"Suffice to say that Abdul Rahman is prepared to practise politics of vengeance and retaliation for the purpose of preserving Umno’s political interest," she said.

Kok said political vengeance had no place in a democracy and urged Najib and the cabinet to repudiate Abdul Rahman's proposal.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Paul Low, who is in charge of good governance and integrity, declined to comment.

Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah, when contacted, also declined to comment.

The Bersih 5 rally is set to take place on Nov 19.

The rally will call for Najib's resignation as prime minister over his involvement in the 1MDB scandal.

The US Department of Justice and Switzerland Office of the Attorney-General believe at least US$3.5 billion to US$4.0 billion was misappropriated from 1MDB and its funds laundered across the world.

Najib had denied wrongdoing or taking public funds for personal gain.

The Malaysian attorney-general Mohamad Apandi Ali had cleared Najib of receiving US$681 million in his personal bank accounts on grounds the money was a "donation".

Apandi also cleared Najib of receiving funds from state-owned SRC International on grounds that Najib did not know the money went into his personal bank accounts and thought the deposits were part of the "donation".
