Only citizens like Jamal can get away with vigilantism

YOURSAY | ‘Can I arrest those who smoke in open air restaurants?’

Selangor police chief: Jamal broke the law by raiding gaming outlet

Trueglitter: The gangster-like tactics adopted by the defiant and untouchable Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos and his notorious rowdies who had trespassed into properties under the pretext of “raiding gaming outlets” without the required permits from the authorities would be regarded a highly dangerous and explosive provocation with the likelihood of causing violent retaliations from individuals, whose safety has been invariably challenged and threatened.

In the face of the apparent dangers which could have been unwittingly ignited by Jamal and his pack of hooligans, the once highly-regarded Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) should not be seen sitting on its hands but to appropriately charge and incarcerate the lawless and aggressive group for breach of the peace and unruly harassment of individuals.

The menacing act of hooliganism perpetrated by the much-emboldened Jamal and his pack of undesirables should immediately be nipped in the bud as any procrastination of police action will inevitably encourage further problems.

Pemerhati: In this particular case, the police are most probably really upset with Jamal, not because of the reasons they have stated but because Jamal’s actions may affect some of them.

Several years ago, a BBC special investigative report by Jonathan Kent alleged that a Malaysian underworld leader had told them that his organisation had a cosy relationship with the police.

The leader said that if the government was strict, they could not carry out their activities.

Drngsc: So, Selangor police chief Abdul Samah Mat, what are you going to do about it? Are you going to allow this loose cannon and vigilante run wild as he wishes, or are you going to arrest him?

The whole country is waiting to see what you are going to do.

Gerard Lourdesamy: Yes, why haven’t the police arrested Jamal yet? You don’t need a police report for this because the suspect has admitted his actions and the media covered it.

The law does not allow vigilantism. Now he wants to go after alleged vice dens in Sekinchan.

He does not know who are behind these illegal vice and gaming activities in the area and the extent of their reach and influence.

To keep Jamal safe for his own good, the police ought to lock him up.

Anonymous_1390303981: Jamal did the right thing by raiding illegal gaming (gambling) dens. I disagreed with all his previous acts except this one.

Uncontrolled illegal gambling den is really bad for any state/country whatsoever. Go Jamal go.

My Opinion: So, Anonymous_1390303981 agrees with Jamal? How does he knows it is an illegal operation?

Even if it is, does it mean everyone can arrest and raid those suspected of committing illegal activities?

Can I arrest those who smoke in open air restaurants? Can I raid those Muslims I think are indulging in close proximity?

Whatshappening: I totally agree that it is the work of the police and its none of Jamal’s business to go and simply raid people's premises.

Under whose authority is he doing all these? When he raids such places, does he show his identification card?

He is acting as though he is in charge of the country. It is as though the country has no PM, no police and no nothing. He is acting as though he is the chosen one and he can do anything.

Kawak: Jamal is more influential and powerful than the inspector-general of police (IGP). After all, he has the full backing of Najib and Umno. Nobody could touch him.

Pemerhati Bebas: Inspecting and raiding (illegal) gaming outlets is the job for the police.

However, being a good and upstanding citizen that he is, Jamal has taken it upon himself, even at the risk of putting himself to bodily harm, to do what the police have failed to do to clean up his town.

For such courage and bravery, Abdul Samah should give the highest commendations to Jamal for doing his civic duty and relieving our overburdened police force of a much-needed rest.

Vijay47: Abdul Samah, my first thought is whether you are IGP Khalid Abu Bakar's brother, as you both reflect the same mentality.

Abdul Samah, you seem more concerned about Jamal's safety and well-being than the fact that he had broken the law, and not only that, created a fiery situation that could have led to havoc across the state.

Since you yourself admit that Jamal had acted illegally, what have you done about it? Why were SWAT teams not activated and F-5Es with accompanying balaclava-clad drones not launched to give Jamal another bloody nose?

Then again, like Khalid, you may claim that since nothing resulted from Jamal's actions, no laws had been broken. One thing I can say, Abdul Samah, is that you are fully qualified to be state police head.

Politician: Selangor MB Azmin Ali wanted the IGP's daughter (just one person) investigated for being in possession of an arm-selling license and he instead was investigated.

Will the police now investigate Jamal for saying there are over 400 illegal gaming dens in Selangor?

Selangor has no power to seal gaming centres, Ean Yong tells Jamal

Hplooi: If Jamal dared to raid massage parlour and maybe even 'certain' gambling outlets, he may find that this will stir up more trouble than he can handle. Reasons? In Malaysia, the underground is really 'more pervasive' than you think.

Remember, 'card-sharp' Paul Phua is reputed to have done 'national security' service for Malaysia - straight from the mouth of one ‘ayahanda’?

And even in this case, someone upstairs may already be screaming blue murder over Jamal's unauthorised and unplanned action. And rest assure that this someone will be more powerful than the state government.

Tembikai: Jamal, please also look into where all the rakyat's billions of ringgit have gone. Don't be called a ‘jaguh kampung’ (village champion).

Ib: Jamal is trying to embarrass Selangor government, but he ends up embarrassing the IGP and the person the IGP reports to. What foolishness.

If I were the president of Umno, I would not tolerate such stupidity.
