MPs butt heads on Najib's silence; three arrested over capsized catamaran

KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

MPs butt heads over Najib's silence on Trump order

Umno's Kinabatangan MP Bung Moktar Radin said it is inappropriate for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to speak out against United States President Donald Trump who was fulfilling an election promise through the executive order to temporarily ban the immigration of citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries to the US.

However, Amanah's Kuala Terengganu MP Raja Kamarul Bahrin Raja Ahmad Shah said Najib's silence shows subservience to the US, just like the PM is trying to appease China.

Meanwhile, chaos took place at major airports in the US as valid US visa holders from the seven states are barred from entering the country under Trump's immigration ban.

In the face of backlash, Trump defends the policy as a move to stop "radical Islamist terrorists" from entering the US.

In neighbouring Canada, five people were shot dead when an assailant opened fire in a mosque in Quebec City in what Prime Minister Justin Tredeau described as an act of terrorism.

Back in the US, Americans raised more than US$600,000 overnight to help a Texas mosque rebuild after it was razed hours after Trump announced the immigration ban. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Three arrested over capsized catamaran

Police have arrested two crew members and the owner of the catamaran that capsized off the coast of Sabah, carrying 30 Chinese national tourists and three crew members, after departing for a tourist resort from the Tanjung Aru jetty last Saturday.

Round-the-clock search to find the six missing passengers continues and Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has ordered a detailed investigation into the tragedy.

Police clarified there were only 27 tourists on board and not 28 as earlier reported. One tourist, whose name was on the manifest, decided to skip the trip at the last minute, upon seeing the crowded vessel.

Other Kinibites

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's lawyer Haniff Khatri said the attacks on Mahathir's alleged role in the 1983 BMF scandal are only to distract from the ongoing 1MDB imbroglio.

However, PAS Youth urged the BMF probe to be reopened so that Mahathir can clear his name.

Jordan Belfort, the Wall Street broker whose biography was turned into the film 'The Wolf of Wall Street', accused those behind the film of being "criminals".

Red Granite Pictures, the firm owned by Najib's stepson Riza Aziz that produced the film, declined to comment when asked. The US State of Department claims the film was made using funds misappropriated from 1MDB, and is seeking to seize its proceeds.

The government has been urged to reveal if China has a role in the RM200 billion Carey Island Port, following the announcement by Port Klang Authority chairperson Kong Cho Ha that China was keen on developing the project, which would be more than double the size of Putrajaya.

Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai is urged to table a Bill to amend the Land Public Transport Commission (Spad) Act to place the commission under the Transport Ministry, after Liow admitted that it was odd for Spad to be under the Prime Minister's Department.

DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang invites the BN, opposition parties and civil society leaders for a pow-wow on Malaysia's direction, to commemorate the 114th anniversary of the birth of the country’s first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, on Feb 8.

Looking ahead

PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar will file a judicial review against the Election Commission local inquiries on redelineation in Kedah, Perak and Johor, which allegedly breached procedures.

Amanah MP Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah will hold a press conference on his legal action against website Mynewshub, which published an article accusing him of holidaying in the UK while his constituents faced floods.
