The much anticipated live-action version of Disney fairytale 'Beauty and the Beast' is set to open in cinemas on March 30.

Confirming this, cinema chain TGV Cinemas said it had received the green light from the movie’s distributor, The Walt Disney Co (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.

“Yes we are going to show 'Beauty and the Beast' in our cinemas this coming March 30. Advance sales will open on March 23,” TGV’s head of marketing services Celeste Koay told Malaysiakini.

Fellow cinema chain Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) on its Facebook page also stated that the movie will be screened with no cuts.

“This is official from Disney. No cuts. PG13. March 30. Get yourself ready!” said the cinema chain in an accompanying comment post.

Disney Malaysia confirmed it in a message to Malaysiakini.

The movie had courted controversy after its director Bill Condon was reported by a UK magazine as stating that the character Le Fou would have a “nice exclusively gay moment” in the movie.

Explaining the cut, Film Censorship Board (LPF) chairperson Abdul Halim Abdul Hamid had blamed Condon for promoting the “gay moment” in the movie.

Disney Malaysia submitted the film for an appeal to the Film Appeals Committee after the local release date for the movie, which was originally slated for a March 16 premiere, was postponed.

It was reported that the Film Appeals Committee was to meet today to review the film.

Meanwhile, news portal Malaysia Outlook reported that TGV had halted its advance ticket sales for the upcoming movie 'Power Rangers' which was slated to open this Thursday.

When asked if it was due to the sexuality of one of the main characters, TGV Pictures marketing manager Grace Tan said: “There are speculations but we are unable to confirm it.”

Power Rangers director Dean Israelite was reported as saying that the character of the Yellow Ranger will question her sexuality in the film.
