SG KANDIS POLLS | PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin said there are no instructions from the party to members and supporters who will be voting in the Sungai Kandis by-election this Saturday.
According to Harakah, Hashim believes that party supporters and members are wise enough to choose between the BN and PKR candidates.
Hashim's clarification comes after a flurry of remarks by PAS office bearers, of which some are contradictory, on who the sizeable amount of party supporters in Sungai Kandis should vote for.
Hashim said these statements do not contradict the party's policy.
"As a member of the Syura Council, any decision made by PAS (on the by-election) so far has not been made known or violated the party's policies.
"Therefore, if there are PAS leaders who openly support the BN candidate, it does not violate PAS' policy because we are allowed to choose lebih ringan bahayanya (the lesser evil)," he said.
So far, two top PAS officials – PAS central committee member Khairuddin Aman Razali and information chief Nasrudin Hassan – have officially endorsed BN candidate Lokman Noor Adam.
While stumping for Lokman, Khairuddin told PAS supporters at a ceramah on July 28 that voters should back the BN candidate because Pakatan Harapan's policies were detrimental to Malays and Muslims.
At the Parliament lobby this morning, Khairuddin said PAS also rejected Harapan because the ruling coalition has failed to fulfil its election pledges.
"That is why we (PAS members) cannot support Harapan. If we don't vote for Harapan, who else (will)?" he asked.
During the May 9 general election, PAS drew 17 percent of the total votes cast in Sungai Kandis, where 70 percent of the constituents are Malay.
The by-election will be held on Aug 4, which will see a contest between Lokman, PKR's Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni and independent K Murthy.
