Vox Populi: Pak Lahs losing control

Malaysiakini readers continue to vent their frustrations over the 'close one eye' scandal and the PM's lack of action against the errant MP.

DPG: When Pak Lah came into power, his first statement was to say that he would come down hard on corruption. He even repeated this some months ago when people were beginning to question his earlier stated intention.

I would now urge the PM to withdraw his earlier statement, or at least, shut up on this corruption issue. We are all beginning to feel embarrassed on his behalf.

If he is serious on coming down hard on corruption, the first thing he would have done when he took over as PM would have been to do away with this 'negotiated tender' procedure and insist on the open-tender system. But obviously, the warlords, division heads in Umno would have nothing of this. I feel the PM is losing control over Umno.

Ramesh: (Pak Lah is) a weak and ineffective leader trying to appear tough on the wrong issues.

Voter With Conscience: Shahrir has got my vote for prime minister and Zaid for DPM.

Mickey Mouse: I relish to read what have been said about the true colours of a majority of our mickey-mouse politicians and I can't agree more. There have been a lot of bickering about issues centering on the environment, the crooked bridge, parliamentary proceedings, rising price of fuel, white elephants projects and corruption.

I want to ask: When is it going to end? I can only say that this beautiful land, Malaysia, is going to the dogs. There are only talk, talk, talk and I think of the acronym NATO, which stands for No Action Talk Only!

Democracy in this country is only window dressing. Where do we go from here? Can somebody from the think-tanks do something fast!

V for Vendetta: If there is no vote of conscience and principles, where is the choice and the exercise of will among our elected representatives? It is all a mere farce as we watch in dismay and ever deepening gloom as our country slips into more repression. What our PM has done is to knowingly condone the corrupt practices he professes to battle. To what extent does he "close one eye" in this sorry affair?

Shahrir is not a victim in this case; he is the martyr and the appalling truth is his actions have revealed the lengths our mindless, self-serving, hyprocritical goverment is prepared to go to stay in power. I watch and despair. I know that mine is not a vote BN will be winning in the next election.

JC: I laughed my head off when I saw the apparent connection between MP Mohd Said bin Yusof, and the company he said he intervened on behalf of, Binyu Sof Enterprise. These people can't even commit a crime with finesse or style. These people are so blatant, and they lie so openly in public, yet they are members of parliament. If Pak Lah doesn't send the ACA into Binyu Sof Enterprise to see what other crimes the company has committed, then there is no hope for this country.

Mohd Said may be a relatively small fry in the overall scheme of the country's leakage, but investigating him and his company would send a strong signal that the government really wants to live up to its principles of transparency and integrity. I already said it in a previous posting: if Anwar Ibrahim was charged and sent to jail for purportedly interfering with an investigation, then why is Mohd Said allowed to roam freely in this country despite his public admission of wrongdoing?

Cinderella Borneo: Mesti ada pembangkang ... kalau semua 'yes men' susahhh ooo.

The following are readers comments from other reports. This one is on Vox Populi: Demise of a towering Malaysian

Salil Tripathi : I read with great sadness the news of MGG Pillai's passing through a post from one of his friends on the Sangkancil newsletter. Then I looked at malaysiakini pages, and learnt more about his untimely death.

The posts on your site, in which readers have offered their reminiscences about MGG show his gregariousness and generosity. He was always willing to share his insights with correspondents like me, who came to Malaysia occasionally from Singapore during my time in the region, 1991-1999, as I tried to understand and unravel the business and political environment of Southeast Asia.

He had strong views which he never avoided sharing, and he had that wonderful ability of pointing new reporters in the right direction of the story, suggesting all possible sources, covering all sides of an issue, irrespective of his personal views on the subject. He will be missed by many of us.

My sincere condolences to his family, and I fervently hope that his spirit continues to thrive, through malaysiakini , and through the work of other journalists.

Alim : What is this guy so worried about Mafrel? That their efforts may bear fruit for use towards this newspaper headline statement "Sack me if you will" - something that made many I know sick despite they being BN voters!
