KS Nallakaruppan will join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) together with 2,000 Indian Malaysian supporters on Sunday.

They will hand over their membership forms to PKR adviser Anwar Ibrahim and his wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is also the president of the opposition party.

"On Sunday, I and some 2,000 Indians are joining PKR. There will be a big ceremony at Istana Hotel with Anwar himself receiving our membership forms," he said when met recently.

"Many of the people are professionals. They wanted to join PKR for a longtime but only know have decided (to do so) and will follow me into PKR," he added.

The former MIC Youth leader said they believe that PKR is a true a multi-racial party which can represent the interest of all Malaysians.

Nallakaruppan or Nalla to his friends hit the headlines in 1998 as the famous tennis partner of Anwar, who was the former deputy premier.

He was arrested for the illegal possession of bullets with an expired weapons permit and faced the death penalty.

In his affidavit, Nalla claimed that the police put a noose around his neck to squeeze him for evidence to use against Anwar but no such evidence surfaced.

On the other hand, Anwar, who claimed to be the victim of a political conspiracy by former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, was charged with corruption and sodomy.

After a year in prison, Nalla was acquitted by the Court of Appeal.

He then left the country with his family and stayed first in India, then in the United States and finally in Australia. In 2003 he returned to witness the retirement of Mahathir.

Elaborating further on his reasons for joining PKR, Nalla said it was because he wanted to help 'his friend' Anwar make a political comeback and his desire to help the poor, especially Indian Malaysians.

"The general election is near and he and PKR will need every help they can get.

"I am not joining just to be Indian leader or for power. It is for the members and for the Malaysian poor, especially the Indians," he added.
