Several Islamic political and non-governmental organisations submitted a memorandum to the United Nations (UN) Secretary General and the US senate committee yesterday calling for action to be taken on Israel upon its admission of having nuclear weapons.

Pas Youth, Parti Keadilan Rakyat youth wing, Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (Abim), Pertubuhan Jamaah Islah Malaysia and the All Malaysia Muslim Undergraduates Movement (Gamis) jointly handed the memorandum through UN Development Programme resident representative Dr Richard Leete.

"(We) are seeking your immediate attention on Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's open admission that Israel is a nuclear weapon state in an interview with German N24 Sat1 TV recently," the memorandum read.

"(It) is the most direct revelation of a long kept secret, long ignored by UN Security Council about Middle East real weapons of mass destruction," it stated.

The memorandum pointed out that US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates also affirmed that the Jewish state has the Middle East's only nuclear arsenal.

The memorandum also expressed disappointment over the war on Iraq: "Weapons of mass destruction are nowhere to be found in the obliterated Iraq as the whole world already knew, neither will your find them in Iran or Syria".

Thus, the groups are urging the US Senate Committee and UN Security Council to take this matter seriously in the urgent interest if international peace and security.

"Under the banner of UN Security Council, UN 1540 Committee (that affirms nuclear proliferation constitutes a threat to international peace and security) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will find [...] Israelis has amassed between 250 to 500 nuclear weapons," it stated further.

They then took a swipe at these parties for practicing 'double standards on non-proliferation policy' and hopes to see a genuine implementation of the policy without fear or favour towards any nations.
