Lina Joy judgment

The Federal Court on May 30 rejected an appeal by Lina Joy to win recognition of her conversion from Islam.

Lina, 43, had sought the removal of the word "Islam" from her national identity card.

But the Federal Court, in a majority decision, threw out her case and said only an Islamic syariah tribunal could legally certify her conversion.

Chief Justice Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim delivered majority judgment, along with Justice Alauddin Mohd Sheriff, while Justice Richard Malanjum dissented.
