A top PKR Wanita delegation presented bouquets to Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) today in a move to ‘show their confidence' and ‘support for the professionalism' of the hospital.

The 15-member delegation led by its chief Zuraida Kamaruddin presented 10 bouquets to the hospital staff, including HKL deputy director Dr Lailanor Ibrahim at her office.

Met by reporters later, Zuraida said the bouquets showed the opposition party's wing's confidence in the hospital's management.

The whole public relations stunt appeared to "express" the wing's disdain with the hospital in its treatment of their party leader Anwar Ibrahim's on July 16.

"The delegation is here today to show our confidence to the management and the professionalism of HKL for giving good service to the people of Malaysia regardless of race.

"We want HKL to go on with this spirit in the name of good governance," said Zuraida, who is the Ampang MP.

When asked whether she meant HKL had acted professionally in dealing with the recent sodomy complaint against Anwar, Zuraida replied: "Yes, they are and so far so good, alhamdulillah (praise to God)."

‘ Different perspectives'

She also defended HKL's move to strip Anwar naked when the police brought him for a medical examination on the night of July 16.

"That is part of the medical check-up process... They were just doing their job, Anwar was not complaining," said the PKR Wanita chief.

"Sometimes as a Muslim, you get angry why are you doing this to our leader (Anwar) but when you rationalise (the matter), there is a reason for doing that, they need to do their job," she added.

To a question whether she was being sarcastic in her remarks, she responded: "You can interpret and read between the lines if you want but what we said, we said it in good faith."

The examination was part of the police's evidence gathering for the investigation into the sodomy allegation against him by ex-aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

Anwar acquiesced to a basic check-up but refused to provide a DNA sample. He claimed that his "private and other necessary parts" were measured.

The hospital however issued a statement later stating that the opposition leader's "decency" was not violated during the medical exam. The director also said Anwar's right was never violated and had given his permission for the exam.

Responding on the hospital's statement, PKR veep R Sivarasa had claimed that the hospital authorities were being used to defend the stripping of Anwar.

Sivarasa, who is also Anwar's lawyer, also said the party has no quarrel with the hospital authorities who had no choice but to perform their duties as required by the police.

Saiful's medical report

Zuraida's press conference today was called in a rather abrupt manner as the media were only informed on the event about 45 minutes before its scheduled time.

In the press advisory to the press, the bouquets stunt was associated with Saiful's medical report made at the hospital.

Asked about it later, Zuraida nevertheless said their action today was "not really" linked to Saiful's medical report nor was it calling for the medical report to be released by HKL.

"I leave it to the police to do it," she answered when asked on whether she was urging HKL to release Saiful's medical report.

She denied their presence was to pressure the hospital to release the report but urged HKL to be "honest" in their findings and to uphold integrity.
