The police are still investigating the involvement of Sungai Siput PSM parliamentarian Dr D Jeyakumar in the 'Ride for change' campaign by grassroots coalition Jaringan Rakyat Tertindas (Jerit), said Selangor police chief Khalid Abu Bakar.

Yesterday, Jeyakumar was quoted in the Star as saying that he was not involved in conceiving the campaign but the police are investigating him for exploiting children and organising illegal processions.

“He (Jeyakumar) admitted to my officer that he was the organiser (when he came to the Rawang police station) ... so action will be taken accordingly,” said Khalid.

On Dec 16, the cycling team of 57 from the north were arrested at Rawang because the organisers had failed to get a permit to ride their bicycles in the town and for exploitation of those under the age of 18.

Among the 57, 27 underaged cyclists were held overnight at the police station under the watch of Welfare Department officers while waiting for their parents to come to the station to pick up their kids.

The adult cyclists, on the other hand, were investigated under section 27 of the Police Act as well as Section 32(b) of the Child Act.

'PSM is not behind the campaign'

Jeyakumar when contacted today said that he only told the cops that he was one of the organisers on the day of the arrest so that he could negotiate with the police.

“See I am a member of Parliament and I have a certain extent of influence with the police... so on that day when I was called, I rushed from Parliament to go there,” he said.

Moreover, Jeyakumar reiterated that the Jerit movement is separate from his political party and added that he had had no role in the decision making process.

“Jerit is a coalition of NGOs and they can think for themselves,” he said.

“It is total bullshit to claim that a political party is behind it... it is true that I have been following the team (from the north) but by car and I was there only to help if they run into any problems,” he added.
