Karpal gets bullets in the mail

DAP national chairperson Karpal Singh has received two live bullets and a note threatening to kill him and his family in an envelope yesterday.

The veteran politician had received the bullets and note in the mail posted to his home address in Jalan Utama, Waterfall, George Town.

Initial probe by police revealed that the brown envelope was posted from Ipoh a day before.

Speaking to newsmen at the Penang police headquarters in George Town today, Karpal called on the Inspector General of Police to immediately investigate the death threats.

“The IGP should assure the safety and security of all people, especially elected representatives and their families,” he said, before lodging a police report.

The envelope containing the live bullets and note was opened by an office staff. The note was written in layman’s Bahasa Melayu.

The note read: “Cilaka, babi, anjing. Jangan main main dengan raja Melayu. Kalau tak sayang anak bini jangan cari pasal. Nanti lu satu family gua bakar. Lu punya rumah semua gua tau!! Lu cabar Melayu, mati lu satu family.”

This is second time in last 10 months, Karpal has received threats to his life. In May last year, Karpal has also received a live bullet and a note threatening him and his family. He then lodged a police report at the Dangi Wangi police station.

The latest threats are believed to be linked to his outspoken views on the current political crisis in Perak and the Sultan Azlan Shah’s role in it.

Charge Khir Toyo

Karpal, the Bukit Gelugor parliamentarian, meanwhile called on the police to immediately nab Sungai Besar state assemblyperson Dr Mohd Khir Toyo for taking part in an illegal street protest against him in George Town last week.

He said Khir Toyo must be charged without any delay and called on the police not to practise double standards in prosecuting those who had broken the law.

Khir Toyo took part in an aborted illegal street protest, organised by Penang Umno Youth movement, near Karpal’s house in Waterfall after Friday prayers last week.

He was taken to the Jalan Patani police station together with several local Umno Youth members for their statements to be recorded and was released shortly after.

Karpal also demanded that the police nab and charge the culprits who staged another illegal protest outside his office in Kuala Lumpur early last week.

“I don’t understand why there is so much delay in prosecuting these illegal protestors,” asked the DAP strongman.

Karpal was accompanied by his son, Datuk Keramat assemblyperson Jagdeep Singh Deo, to the Penang police headquarters.
