"WHAT has she done with her life?"

That question confronts Edward Carr at his wife's funeral, prompting him to revisit old memories of her life, his life and the life they built together. Looking over her casket, Edward, a middle-aged man played by Patrick Teoh, is trying to find the right words to say in his wife's eulogy.

It's not that his wife, Mary Josephine or "My Jojo" as he affectionately calls her, had a dull life. They had a magnificent life together; raising their daughters, building up a business empire and spending their entire married-life totally devoted to each other.

Directed by Gavin Yap, Wrecks is essentially a love story, a tale most people wish was theirs to tell.

Neil LaBute's beautifully-written story takes audiences right into the internal consciousness of a grieving man. While the twist is a little clichd for these types of stories, Teoh's powerful performance makes up for it.

He slips effortlessly into the role of Edward Carr. His stunning one-man performance makes it easy to forget that you are watching feisty Patrick Teoh, one of the most recognisable radio personalities in Malaysia.

Honour wife's memory

Edward is determined to honour the memory of his wife with dignity and grace, the very same way she lived and died. He is cautious not to reveal too many private details to preserve the memory of Mary. Besides, it's none of their business, he says.

Edward tries to remain stoic, although he maintains that he did cry when Mary let go of life. He is not a man who displays emotions, especially his grief, but as the narrative unfolds Edward is overwhelmed.

Having lost his wife of 30 years to cancer and facing the disease himself, Edward is unconcerned. His life was Mary Josephine and now that she has gone, he has almost nothing left to live for.
