The source and the history of Treasure Pot

A Treasure Pot, usually prepared by simmering 100 different ingredients in a pot, is a traditional dish from Yuan Long Village in Hong Kong. The combination of the various tastes is the basic principle of making this unique dish. Villagers liked to celebrate special occasions by slowly heating up the Treasure Pot with a charcoal fire in an open space. Nowadays, the Treasure Pot is eaten during Chinese New Year to symbolise a festive reunion.

In another version of the history of Treasure Pot, at the end of the Song Dynasty, the Song Emperor was in distress and trying to escape from his enemy. He ended up hiding in a village in Yuan Long, Hong Kong. When the villagers found out that the emperor was in their midst, they served the best food they had as a mark of respect to him, cooked in a wooden pot. The most exquisite and expensive food is therefore always placed as the top layer in a Treasure Pot.
