KUALA LUMPUR, 27 Aug - Shopee and the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) have formed a unique partnership in celebration of Merdeka and Malaysia Day. Through a series of initiatives, the collaboration aims to inculcate a deeper sense of love and appreciation for the country and promote unity as the nation celebrates another year of independence amidst the pandemic.

The partnership kickstarts with the Dari Merdeka ke Malaysia screenings, where a series of historical documentaries will be showcased on the e-commerce platform. These documentaries portray the journey of the country towards independence, and the formation of Malaysia, together with the rich heritage and culture of Malaysians. They will be livestreamed on Shopee Live at 9.30 PM on 30 and 31 August, 6, 7, 13, 14 and 16 September.

Dr. Ahmad Idham Ahmad Nadzri, Chief Executive Officer of FINAS said, “FINAS has always strived to promote, nurture and facilitate the local film industry development; our strategic partnership with Shopee allows us to solidify our capacity-building strategies with emerging filmmakers and diversified audiences across platforms. As films provide multifarious advantages as an educational and inspirational tool, showcasing historical documentaries about our national glorious moments, heroes as well as their emotional ride, struggle and journey are eminently important to inculcate love and patriotism towards the making of Malaysia, and the unity portrayed in achieving independence.”

Terence Pang, Chief Operating Officer of Shopee said, “It is humbling to be working with the National Film Development Corporation and given the opportunity to livestream documentaries that detail the historical fabric of Malaysia. Ultimately, ‘Dari Merdeka ke Malaysia’ seeks to display what matters most - unity and perseverance, especially in these tough times. That said, Shopee looks forward to celebrating Merdeka and Malaysia Day with all Malaysians.”

Meanwhile, in celebration of the local seller community, Shopee will be dedicating a Shop Malaysia Online (SMO) and Go-Ecommerce site takeover called #ShopeeSapotLokal on 31 August and 16 September respectively. Malaysians will receive upsized vouchers offering discounts of up to 31% when purchasing from Malaysian sellers during these two days.

At the same time, Shopee will be launching an animated Merdeka music video that will feature six local sellers and their e-commerce journey on Shopee. The lyrics for the video are written and will be presented by Malaysian rapper Kayda Aziz, who will wow viewers with her vocal prowess.

SMO and Go-Ecommerce are e-commerce initiatives by the Ministry of Finance (MOF), with the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) tasked at driving the campaign from now till 31 December 2021.

Pang urged Malaysians to explore products and support local sellers by taking advantage of these special vouchers offered on 31 August and 16 September. “This is a continuous commitment on our part in ensuring local businesses stay at the top of the minds amongst our shoppers, and #ShopeeSapotLokal provides the spotlight on local sellers, providing them with the exposure they need and deserve.”

Dari Merdeka ke Malaysia and #ShopeeSapotLokal initiatives are part of the 9.9 Super Shopping Day, which is currently taking place till 9 September. Shoppers can look forward to claiming Free Shipping and 99% Coins Cashback vouchers, both with no minimum spend. Users can also stand a chance to win a brand new Mercedes-Benz by participating in the Play & Win Mercedes-Benz game by collecting golden tickets daily.
