SERVIER MALAYSIA has launched emoflon®, an ointment for the treatment of symptoms associated with hemorrhoidal disease and its complications (eg, eczema, anal fissure), to meet patients’ needs and improve their quality of life.

Hemorrhoidal tissues are clusters of vascular tissues, smooth muscles and connective tissues that lie along the anal canal. Everyone has these hemorrhoidal tissue.

Hemorrhoidal disease occurs from pathological changes that cause damage to the hemorrhoid's lining and result in swollen veins in the anus and lower rectum.

Consultants general and colorectal surgeons, Dato’ Dr. Meheshinder Singh, Dr. Akhtar Qureshi and Dr. Paul Selvindoss, who were present at a media tutorial session, shared an in-depth understanding about hemorrhoidal disease and the treatments available to meet patients’ needs.

Prevalence and effects of hemorrhoidal disease

Hemorrhoidal disease is known to have symptoms such as pain, itching, burning, anal discomfort, bleeding and prolapse.

Painful hemorrhoids can negatively impact a patient’s quality of life. These include feeling uncomfortable when remaining seated, standing, while working, walking or exercising, during bowel movements, and even disrupting your relationship with your partner. However, with treatment, living a normal life is possible.

Hemorrhoidal disease affects more people than we might think. An international survey showed that one in ten people suffers from hemorrhoidal disease.²  Thus, it is important to recognise the causes and symptoms in order to prevent or better manage it.

Understanding hemorrhoidal disease

There are two kinds of hemorrhoidal disease. Those that develop inside the rectum are called internal hemorrhoids and are usually painless but tend to bleed. Those that develop under the skin around the anus are called external hemorrhoids and these can cause pain.

Understanding hemorrhoidal disease

Seeing blood in your toilet bowl after a bowel movement is one of the main symptoms of hemorrhoidal disease. You may also experience bright red blood on toilet paper or in your stool after a bowel movement, itching and pain in the anal area especially when sitting, pain during bowel movements and painful lumps around the anus.

Any sort of straining that increases pressure on your belly or lower extremities can aggravate the condition.  Hemorrhoids may develop due to pelvic pressure from weight gain, especially during pregnancy, prolonged sitting on the toilet for a long time or pushing too hard to have a bowel movement because of constipation.

Lifestyle modifications can be adopted to prevent hemorrhoidal disease. These include adding more fibre and fluids to your diet and reducing consumption of spicy food and alcohol. Do exercise regularly and improve your anal hygiene. It is also advisable to go to the toilet as soon as you have the urge. Do not to strain or hold your breath during bowel movement and avoid medications that can cause constipation or diarrhoea. The goal is to reduce your symptoms. There are four grades of hemorrhoidal disease which are classified based on the degree of prolapse of the hemorrhoids.

Kindly refer to your healthcare provider if you have any of the symptoms above.

Oral treatment (medication), local relief (with creams and ointments) or medical procedures are some of the treatment options available.

emoflon® - A rectal ointment intended for the treatment of symptoms associated with hemorrhoidal disease and its complications (eg, eczema, anal fissure).

Now available in Malaysia, emoflon®, is a rectal ointment which is cortisone-free and lidocaine-free to meet the needs of patients with hemorrhoidal disease.

Easy-to-use with a triple mode of action, emoflon®’s active ingredient, sucralfate, works to form a mechanical barrier. This barrier allows emoflon® to effectively cover and protect the epidermis, provide care to the inflamed and itchy skin, and help promote skin regeneration.

It also diminishes the drying out of the skin which helps in wound healing and reduces the risk of anal fissure (small tear in the thin, moist tissue that lines the anus) and injury caused by defecation. As a result, proper wound healing can occur with the use of emoflon®.

The physical active ingredient in emoflon® called sucralfate works to form a mechanical barrier to promote wound healing

emoflon®  is applied around the anus after defecation, or a small amount in the rectum with the applicator provided. Recommended use is one or two times daily, up to four weeks and should be used on non-bleeding hemorrhoids.

An Italian multi-centre study, EMOCARE, was conducted between 16 December 2019 and 5 July 2020. The study which provided real-life data, evaluated the effect of emoflon®  on quality of life and symptom frequency in 290 participants with hemorrhoidal disease within 7 days from the commencement of the study and were recruited from 36 community pharmacies.¹

After a 14-day period, 39.4% of participants reported that they no longer had haemorrhoidal symptoms. The participants’ quality of life was significantly improved and symptoms were significantly reduced from baseline. The most significant improvements among participants were the reduction in pain (72.1%), swelling (68.3%), itching (53.3%) and bleeding (46.7%).¹

The majority of participants (>92%) found the application of emoflon®  very easy, easy or neither easy nor hard to use. Just over half of participants (53.3%) used the provided applicator and almost all participants (94.4%) found the consistency of this sucralfate ointment ‘absolutely’ or ‘quite’ appropriate for use.¹

With the availability of emoflon®, patients now have an effective and easy to use treatment option that is made to help them attain a better quality of life by treating their hemorrhoidal disease.¹

Patients should carefully read the Instructions for Use before use. They should not use in case of known hypersensitivity to lanolin or to other ingredients contained in this product. They also should not use on bleeding hemorrhoids. Patients should refer to their Healthcare Professionals for more information.
