The International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) was to be one of twenty built environments included in SinggahKL, an event organized by Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) in March 2024 that offers guided tours of iconic buildings in Kuala Lumpur to architects and members of the public.

ISKL’s award-winning campus features world-class academic, arts, and sports facilities

In collaboration with ISKL, project architect VERITAS gave attendees an insider's tour of the award-winning campus located just three kilometres from KLCC.

ISKL’s Head of School, Mr Rami Madani said, “It was a great opportunity for the architects to share how our campus has been designed to be sustainable and support ISKL’s high-quality academic program and wide range of extracurricular opportunities. The result is a sustainable, world-class learning environment that supports collaboration, provides flexibility, and fosters interaction and connectivity.”

Mr. Madani continued, “In line with our philosophy of continuous improvement, we are excited to be now working on a range of campus enhancements, including new facilities that will ensure our community benefits in the short and longer term from learning spaces and facilities that evolve in line with the educational, social, and emotional needs of our students.”

Purpose-built in 2018, ISKL’s campus was designed by global architects HOK in collaboration with Malaysian architectural partner Veritas Design Group. Together, they worked with ISKL’s students, educators, Board, and parents to develop state-of-the-art learning facilities. The result is an exemplary 25-acre campus providing an inspirational and inclusive learning environment for its 1,700 plus students aged 3 to 18 who collectively represent more than 70 different nationalities.

The campus features leading-edge academic, arts, and sports facilities, including a Performing Arts Centre, sports complexes featuring a 400-metre eight-lane track, basketball, volleyball, badminton, and tennis courts, indoor fitness center, climbing wall, full-sized rugby, soccer, and softball pitches, two gymnasiums, as well as an Aquatics Centre that boasts a 50-metre Olympic-sized competition pool, 25-metre pool, and learn-to-swim pool.

The school’s learning spaces incorporate the latest in technology, teaching, and learning concepts and include three libraries, technology, science, and food technology laboratories, multi-sensory and makerspaces, dance, visual, and digital art studios, early years play area and playgrounds, eco-gardens, and recycling/compost centers. Its specialist Life-centered Education facilities support students with more significant intellectual, learning, or developmental differences.

A coffee shop, parent lounges, and dedicated Parent-Teacher Association spaces foster community involvement and provide welcoming places for parents and volunteers to meet.

The campus tour, led by Mr. Ng Yiek Seng, Principal and Managing Director of VERITAS, offered SinggahKL attendees a unique opportunity to engage with the architects and gain insights into their innovative ideas and creative solutions.

“We are extremely proud of ISKL’s campus,” said Mr. Ng. “It’s an integral part of Kuala Lumpur's architectural landscape, and it was an honour to provide participants with an insightful and informative experience about the architectural significance and many design features of ISKL, including the approach to sustainability.”

In line with the school’s commitment to sustainability, which is embedded within its curriculum and culture, the sustainable design of the campus provides students with real-life learning experiences. For example, elements of the building management system act as a teaching tool to show the school’s real-time resource consumption, encouraging students to look for ways to save energy.

The campus has been extensively recognised for demonstrating innovative and outstanding sustainable design while contributing positively to the community. Awards include the MalaysiaGBC Leadership In Sustainability Awards 2022 joint winner Best New Green & Sustainable Academia Building, The Edge PAM Green Excellence Award 2019, the PAM 2019 Gold Award for a new building in the field of Education, and the Cityscape Global Award 2019 for Sustainability. Sunway Construction received the Contractor of the Year Award at the Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Awards in 2018 for its construction.
