PETALING JAYA, 6 October 2025 - Damansara Specialist Hospital (“DSH”), under the KPJ Healthcare group, launched its newly renovated Oncology Daycare Unit (“ODCU”) in conjunction with Pink October 2025. The launch, graced by Duli Yang Maha Mulia Tengku Permaisuri Hajah Norashikin, Tengku Permaisuri Selangor, marks another step forward in DSH’s ongoing effort to enhance cancer care and raise awareness on early detection.

Guided by its purpose of Care for Life, DSH remains dedicated to providing a supportive environment for patients and families navigating cancer treatment. Established in 1997, the unit has long served as a trusted centre for outpatient chemotherapy and cancer management.

The ODCU provides a comprehensive range of therapies, including chemotherapy and targeted treatments such as hormone therapy, angiogenesis inhibitors, immunotherapy and monoclonal antibodies. It also offers bone-strengthening medication for patients with bone metastases, alongside palliative and supportive care that focuses on symptom management and quality of life.

The upgraded facility now features a refreshed and calming environment with upgraded interiors and a dedicated treatment room for minor procedures. These enhancements reflect DSH’s commitment to ensuring patient comfort, privacy and holistic care.

Chin Keat Chyuan, President and Managing Director of KPJ Healthcare said, “The upgraded Oncology Daycare Unit reflects our belief that excellent cancer care extends beyond medical treatment. It is about providing every patient with care that is attentive, respectful and reassuring. At DSH, we continue to enhance our services and collaborations so that more people can receive timely screening and treatment in a safe, supportive environment.”

Echoing this, Associate Professor Dr Aminudin Rahman Mohd Mydin, Head of Oncology at DSH, said that while breast cancer is one of the most treatable cancers, many cases are still diagnosed late.

“We are seeing more young women being diagnosed, including during pregnancy. Many are still detected at advanced stages, even though breast cancer is among the easiest to identify through screening. When found early, the survival rate is high, but once it spreads, treatment becomes more complex, costly and life-changing,” he said.

Dr Aminudin added, “Awareness must lead to action. Screening has to be convenient and accessible for all women. At DSH, our multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses and support staff work closely to ensure every patient receives care that is compassionate and empowering. With the upgraded Oncology Daycare Unit, we aim to provide a healing environment where patients and families can find strength and hope together.”

Tuan Hj. Mohamad Zahri bin Hj. Samingon, Datuk Bandar Petaling Jaya, alongside Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr Azizi Haji Omar, Board Member of KPJ Healthcare & Consultant Paediatrician at DSH.

The event gathered patients, survivors, healthcare professionals and community partners in a message of hope and strength. Non-governmental organisations such as Persatuan Kanser KanWork (“KanWork”) and the National Cancer Society Malaysia (“NCSM”) and Majlis Kanser Nasional (“MAKNA”) participated with educational booths and health screenings encouraging women to take proactive steps in protecting their wellbeing.

Breast cancer remains the most common cancer affecting Malaysian women, accounting for nearly one-third of all cancer cases. Although awareness has grown, many are still diagnosed at later stages when treatment becomes more complex. DSH continues to play its part by improving access to early screening, multidisciplinary expertise and patient education initiatives that encourage early intervention.

The Oncology Daycare Unit continues to serve more patients each year, reflecting public confidence in DSH’s oncology specialists, nurses and allied health professionals who guide patients through every stage of recovery with compassion and professionalism.

The upgraded Oncology Daycare Unit reflects DSH’s continuous journey to advance patient-centred care. It also supports KPJ Health System’s broader effort to integrate clinical, education and research in improving patient outcomes.
