KUALA LUMPUR, 5 March 2026 – UEM Sunrise Berhad (“UEM Sunrise” or the Company) removed 240 kilogrammes of waste from Sungai Keroh in Segambut during a community clean-up initiative in collaboration with Hara Makers, a social enterprise that drives environmental action through skills-based and environmental programmes, as part of its corporate social responsibility efforts.
As a long-standing developer in the broader Segambut area, including Mont’Kiara and Solaris Dutamas, UEM Sunrise recognises the importance of contributing to the environmental resilience of the communities surrounding its developments.

At first light, 30 UEM Sunrise employee volunteers gathered along the riverbank for briefing before stepping into the water equipped with proper gloves and safety boots. The initiative was coordinated by Hara Makers, with structured on-site guidance and established safety and environmental protocols.
Working in teams, they waded knee-deep into the river, removing plastic, fabric, e-waste and other submerged debris, highlighting the persistent challenge of unmanaged solid waste in urban waterways. The collected waste was categorised and recorded on-site, reinforcing the importance of data-driven environmental monitoring alongside direct action.

According to the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry, water quality monitoring continues to show that several rivers across Malaysia remain classified as polluted or moderately polluted¹. This underscores the persistent challenge of maintaining environmental resilience within urban waterways, particularly in rapidly developing areas.
Dr. Nik Faizah Nik Mahmood, Head of Sustainability of UEM Sunrise, said, “We remain committed to supporting community-led environmental initiatives as part of our sustainability agenda and responsible urban development approach. While water quality data continues to indicate that many rivers in Malaysia face pollution challenges, collaborative initiatives such as the Sungai Keroh clean-up reflect how partnerships with local stakeholders can translate sustainability commitments into meaningful, on-the-ground action, contributing to healthier waterways and more resilient communities.”
Chee Lee Yoon, Co-founder and Chief Operations Officer of Hara Makers, said, “River pollution reflects deeper patterns of consumption, waste management and awareness within our communities. Through initiatives such as the Sungai Keroh clean-up, we combine direct environmental action with learning, helping participants understand the systemic causes behind what they remove from the river. Partnerships with organisations like UEM Sunrise enable us to scale this impact, demonstrating that responsible development and community stewardship must go hand in hand.”
The initiative also served as a team-building exercise that strengthened employee engagement and fostered a shared sense of purpose in giving back to the community. By the end of the session, filled bags lined the riverbank, serving as a visible reminder of the collective effort required to restore and safeguard urban ecosystems.

The collaboration reflects UEM Sunrise’s continued focus on embedding responsible practices across its operations and communities. In the most recent FTSE4Good Index Series assessment, the Company achieved an ESG score of 4.1, its highest to date and well above the industry average of 2.3, reinforcing its continued progress in sustainability practices and its commitment to sustainable development.
Beyond community initiatives, UEM Sunrise continues to embed environmental stewardship within its developments. This includes SIREH Park in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, a 343-acre green lung recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records in 2025 as Malaysia’s largest urban community green recreational park. As a living example of how biodiversity conservation and community spaces can coexist within an urban township, it reflects the Company’s long-term commitment to building resilient and inclusive environments.
