KUALA LUMPUR, 6 APRIL 2026 – Batik Air is strengthening its international network with the introduction of new direct services to two of its key global markets, China and Australia — reflecting the airline’s continued commitment to supporting sustained travel demand and reinforcing connectivity as Malaysia prepares for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

The introduction of the Kuala Lumpur–Shanghai service, commencing 23 June 2026, marks a significant milestone in Batik Air’s network expansion into China, complementing its existing services to Changsha, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Kunming, Xiamen, and Zhengzhou. The route will be operated by Boeing 737 aircraft, further reinforcing connectivity between Kuala Lumpur and one of the Asia-Pacific region’s key economic and tourism centres.

Shanghai is a global metropolis where heritage meets innovation. The historic Bund along the Huangpu River and the futuristic skyline of Pudong reflect the city’s defining contrast. Areas such as the Former French Concession, with its tree-lined streets and preserved architecture, and Yu Garden, a classical Chinese garden, add cultural depth. As a major centre for commerce, lifestyle, and culture, Shanghai attracts both business and leisure travellers, supported by a vibrant culinary scene and retail districts such as Nanjing Road and Xintiandi.

In parallel with its expansion into China, Batik Air is strengthening its presence in Australia with the introduction of a direct Kuala Lumpur–Sydney service commencing 1 July 2026, operated by Airbus A330 aircraft for enhanced capacity and comfort on long-haul travel. Batik Air currently serves Australia through Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney via Denpasar, alongside 14 weekly direct Kuala Lumpur–Perth flights. The new non-stop Sydney service, operating seven times weekly, complements existing operations and further strengthens connectivity within one of the airline’s key international markets.

Sydney, Australia’s largest city and a leading international gateway, combines natural attractions with urban appeal. Iconic landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, along with destinations like Darling Harbour and Bondi Beach, support its global recognition. As a key commercial and financial centre and primary entry point into Australia, Sydney plays a vital role in regional and long-haul travel networks.

Together, these developments reflect a strategic, demand-driven approach to strengthening links with two of the region’s most influential markets. The expansion underscores the airline’s continued focus on aligning its network with evolving market conditions while maintaining a balanced and forward-looking growth strategy.

The expansion into Shanghai and Sydney comes amid continued momentum in Malaysia’s travel sector, with both China and Australia remaining key contributors to inbound and outbound traffic. In 2025, Malaysia recorded approximately 4.7 million visitors from China and over half a million visitors from Australia (Based on source: https://data.tourism.gov.my).

Improved connectivity and ongoing travel facilitation, including visa-free access for Malaysian travellers to China for short stays, continue to support increased mobility and accessibility between the two countries. Australia similarly maintains strong bilateral travel flows, driven by tourism, business, and Visiting Friends and Relatives (VFR) segments.

Batik Air Chief Executive Officer Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy said the introduction of both routes reflects the airline’s continued commitment to building a resilient, demand-driven network while maintaining a measured outlook amid an evolving global environment.

“Batik Air continues to align its network with sustained market demand, and the addition of Shanghai and Sydney strengthens two of our most important international corridors,” he said. “These routes support tourism and business travel while enhancing overall connectivity between Malaysia and key global markets.”

“As Malaysia prepares for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, improved air connectivity will play a critical role in supporting inbound travel growth. China and Australia remain important markets, and these services will help facilitate greater movement of travellers while reinforcing economic and people to-people ties.”

“Despite the broader global environment, the outlook for travel demand remains positive. The airline remains focused on maintaining a balanced and sustainable approach to growth, identifying opportunities where demand is strongest while continuing to support Malaysia’s position as a preferred destination in the region.”

Recognising the importance of family travel across its network, Batik Air continues to enhance its onboard experience with initiatives such as its ‘Kids-Eat-Free’ offering. Designed to support families travelling with children, the programme provides added value by allowing young passengers to enjoy complimentary meal options, making journeys more convenient and enjoyable for families. This initiative reflects the airline’s broader commitment to delivering a more inclusive travel experience that caters to diverse passenger needs, particularly within the growing family travel segment.

In addition, Batik Air continues to offer a wide selection of more than 20 pre-purchased meals and beverages, allowing passengers to customise their inflight experience with added convenience and value. Guests are encouraged to pre-book their meals in advance to enjoy greater savings while helping to minimise food wastage, supporting the airline’s ongoing sustainability efforts. For added flexibility, a selection of meals and beverages is also available for purchase onboard, subject to availability.

With Shanghai and Sydney now introduced to its network, Batik Air further strengthens its role as a regional connector, expanding access to key global destinations while supporting increased mobility across the Asia-Pacific region. These new routes are expected to stimulate two-way travel, contributing to tourism flows into Malaysia while further enhancing commercial exchanges, cultural connections, and people-to-people ties between markets.
