Several high-profile court cases linked to “political donations” have raised calls by civil society for laws on political funding. Political donations are the contribution of funds to a political activity, political party, or candidate. Currently, there are no laws in the country to regulate and monitor political funds, only besides the limits on campaign spending by candidates. The lack of law and regulations in political fundings have caused the walls of this law to be loopholed for corruption.

The amendment of political financing law was planned to be tabled in parliament sitting in the October to November’s term, but due to the recent announcement of dissolution of Parliament, this topic has yet to be discussed.

The 4th session of Malaysiakini’s Youth Parliamentary Debathon is going to be held on Zoom on the 29th October 2022, on the motion topic of “Amendment of Political Financing Law in Malaysia” to involve youths aged between 16 - 25 years old to role play as member of parliament to discuss on this pertaining issue and provide suggestions on improvising the current political financing law which can be brought as guidances to the new MPs for parliament sittings in the next term.  

This event also aims to signify that youths are capable of leading a well rounded discussion on serious topics including the topic of political financing law. The youths of today are politically literate and ready to be part of the decision making processes along with the law makers like the MPs. 

Not only that, the audiences are able to vote for the motion they agree with, through a voting platform. This is to show that we practice democracy whereby the decision made is not only through the policymakers but the citizens as well!

There will be awards such as the Best Debater Award and the Most Popular Award, given to the debaters that are deemed outstanding by the panel judges and most voted by the audience.
