How to age well like Michelle Yeoh

Just as a car needs petrol to run, your body needs fuel to do all the things it must do every day. That fuel, of course, comes from food where we can get energy and nutrients from.

However, sometimes our modern busy lifestyles are often at odds with our healthy aspirations.

Busy Lifestyles versus Health and Wellness

Being on the run these days is nothing strange to anyone. But, at the same time, we’re also looking to stay healthy and not sacrifice our well-being.

Michelle Yeoh once quoted, “taking care of yourself is something that you learn to do for yourself and for people you love”. The 60-year-old actress advised that in life, there are always many phases and chapters, but age should not limit our career or what we love to do. Acting in martial arts or action movies might seem like a difficult task but Michelle Yeoh has made it look all too easy on the big screen.

“Having a balanced diet is very important. My work can be physically intensive, so I need to take care of my body by living an active and healthy lifestyle and get the proper nutrition I need. This has allowed me to continue doing my own stunts and take on roles which are more physically challenging”, she said.

1. Get Sufficient Essential Nutrients with a balanced diet - Calcium, Protein, Prebiotics

a) Calcium: Building blocks to strong bones

“One of the key requirements in building strong bones is sufficient calcium intake. If there is insufficient amount of calcium, your body will withdraw calcium from your bones and this would lead to bone mass loss making it weak and porous. Eventually it will put you at risk for osteoporosis,” said Nabihah Hannah Binti Razaleigh, Clinical Dietitian.

According to the recommended nutrient intake for Malaysians, the recommended amount of calcium needed for an adult is 1000 – 1200 mg/day¹. Calcium-rich food in the Malaysian diet can be obtained from milk and dairy products, fish with edible bones such as canned sardines and anchovies, beans and bean products including yellow dhal, tofu and tempeh.

b) Proteins: Core to movements

Regardless of your age, it’s important to build your muscles as they play crucial roles to support movements. This helps with your daily tasks like walking, lifting items, and even breathing.

“Having poor muscles indicates loss of muscle tissues which may increase the risk for sarcopenia as people grow older. To ensure healthy muscles for the body, it is important to eat food rich in protein and do regular exercises,” said Nabihah.

c) Prebiotics: Food to support gut

Nabihah explained that according to a study, prebiotics are plant fibres that can flourish the growth of good bacteria in the gut or sometimes known as “food for good bacteria”. This makes your digestive system work better. Good gut function is important for effective nutrient digestion and absorption.

2. Make the most out of your daily activities

“Generally an adult needs at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity for at least 5 days in a week, preferably every day. If you want to meet specific fitness goals, you may need to exercise more. With our busy lifestyle, we may find it difficult to spare some time to exercise. Not to worry, because you can opt for the non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) technique,” said Noranisah Binti Zulkafli, Physiotherapist.

Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis , or NEAT, describes the calories burned by the movements we make when we go about our daily business. Factoring NEAT into your day such as taking the stairs instead of elevators and escalators, doing your house chores and gardening is a great way to create a healthy lifestyle.

Did you know proper nutrition gets more important as you grow older?

This is because your ageing body does not absorb nutrients as well as it once did². Hence, you need to focus on nutrient-rich foods that can provide high quality protein, healthy fats, fibre, vitamins and minerals.

Michelle Yeoh joined Anlene in 2008 because she believes the brand has always maintained high quality of their products and has stayed true to their philosophy of enabling people to be stronger than their age.
