LifeCare champions preventive health as a lifelong commitment

Health often takes a back seat until a warning sign appears. Yet many chronic conditions develop quietly, without obvious symptoms, making regular screenings one of the most important steps individuals can take to protect their future well-being.

Emphasising the importance of making preventive healthcare a lifelong commitment,
LifeCare’s LIVE BETTER: 1 + 364 Days of Care, Starts Today brought together Malaysians for a complimentary health and wellness event jointly organised by LifeCare Diagnostic Medical Centre, Malaysiakini and Kini Events.

Attendees gained insights into their health through personalised screenings and expert consultations

Held at LifeCare Diagnostic Medical Centre in Bangsar South, the event connected healthcare experts and the public to explore the importance of preventive healthcare, nutrition and healthy ageing. In addition to informative sessions, participants underwent health screenings, received personalised consultations, and experienced regenerative wellness assessments to better understand and manage their long-term health.

Putting prevention first

Dr Alex Leong Vui Beng, Director of LifeCare Group, shares why preventive healthcare should begin long before symptoms appear, encouraging Malaysians to make annual health screenings a lifelong habit through the "1 + 364 Days of Care" initiative.

Leading the panel discussion was Dr Alex Leong Vui Beng, Director of LifeCare Group, who spoke about the importance of making preventive healthcare part of everyday life instead of an afterthought.

He has observed that many people only seek medical attention after symptoms appear or when a loved one is diagnosed with a serious illness. By then, however, opportunities for early intervention may already have been lost.

He then explained the philosophy behind LifeCare's "1 + 364 Days of Care" initiative, which encourages people to set aside just one day each year for a comprehensive health screening, even if they feel perfectly healthy.

“A health screening provides valuable insights into your health. Your blood sugar, cholesterol, kidney and liver function, and many other health indicators offer important insights into your overall wellbeing. Even if everything appears normal, monitoring these results over time enables you to detect emerging trends, identify potential risks early and take preventive action before illness develops,” he explained.

He further explained that chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and cancers are becoming increasingly prevalent, with many affecting younger adults too. Detecting these conditions early gives individuals the opportunity to adopt healthier habits, improve their diet, stay physically active and seek professional guidance before medication or more intensive treatment becomes necessary.

Building better nutrition habits through balance, moderation and mindful choices

LifeCare dietitian Chan She Mun reminded participants that healthy eating is about balance and moderation, not giving up the foods they enjoy, emphasising that sustainable habits are far more effective than short-term restrictions.

Adding a nutritional perspective to the discussion, LifeCare dietitian Chan She Mun shared advice on building healthier eating habits through simple, sustainable changes.

Rather than advocating restrictive diets, she encouraged participants to make small adjustments that could be maintained over time. Simple steps such as eating more fruits and vegetables, including fibre-rich foods, and choosing healthier sources of protein can have a meaningful impact on long-term health.

She also reminded participants that healthy eating does not mean giving up the foods they enjoy.

"It's about balance and moderation. Sustainable habits will always be more effective than short-term restrictions," she said.

For busy working adults, She Mun encouraged making healthy eating as convenient as possible. Keeping nutritious snacks within reach, choosing water instead of sugary drinks, and adding vegetables to takeaway meals can make a meaningful difference over time.

She also challenged the misconception that nutrition only becomes important later in life or after developing a medical condition.

"The food choices you make in your twenties, thirties and forties shape your health decades later. Prevention starts much earlier than most people realise," she said.

Beyond the panel discussions, attendees gained hands-on insights into their health through body composition analysis, glucose and cholesterol screenings, consultations with healthcare professionals, Enhanced External Counterpulsation (ECP) therapy and LOOPA Functional Training trials.

"My daughter encouraged me to attend this session, and I'm glad she did. I used to think that if I wasn't experiencing any symptoms, there was no need for a health check-up. Now I understand that preventive screenings are important because they can identify potential health issues before they become serious,” said Nurul Atiqah Perema.

Another attendee, Remesh Dayanandan, said, "We came to learn more about our health, and the glucose and cholesterol screening was a great starting point. It encouraged us to make healthier choices together," he said, who attended the event with his partner, Daiyana Darsihiny.

"I hope LifeCare will continue organising more initiatives like this, as they provide the public with greater opportunities to monitor their health and take preventive action early,” said Wong Ru-Jin.
