Did you know that KLIA welcomes over 60 million passengers each year, and has been ranked the most-connected airport in the Asia-Pacific region? That means Malaysia is strengthening travel, tourism and business links across Asia like never before.
With travel demand on the rise, the number of vehicles at KLIA’s kerbsides is growing too. Picture the rush of dropping off or picking up loved ones and the frustration when traffic slows to a crawl because of lingering cars. According to Malaysia Airports, about 45,000 vehicles enter and exit the pick-up and drop-off areas at KLIA Terminal 1 and 2 daily. During peak hours, up to 5,000 cars may be at the kerbsides at once, leading to congestion, longer waits, and limited space.
Smarter traffic flow, better airport experience

To address congestion, KLIA has commenced a trial run in September of its new Vehicle Access Management System (VAMS) at KLIA Terminal 1 (Level 5 departures and Level 3 arrivals) and KLIA Terminal 2 (Level 3 departures and Level 2 arrivals). Running until Nov 30th, 2025, the trial aims to improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and provide smoother access to the terminal.
By combining automation, data, and artificial intelligence (AI), the system helps manage the movement of vehicles more effectively, especially at the airport’s busy kerbsides.
How VAMS works:

1. Drive up and drop off
Head straight to the kerbside to drop off or pick up passengers with ease. The barrier gate automatically detects your vehicle’s number plate, ensuring smooth entry and exit. AI cameras track your vehicle’s movement in real time.
2. Quick and smooth
Drivers are advised to complete their drop-off or pick-up within 10 minutes.
User-friendly system
The VAMS is designed with simplicity and convenience in mind. Digital display screens, which are currently undergoing system integration, will show the duration of each vehicle’s stay. As VAMS is fully automated, there is no need for registration, apps, or additional devices.
After completing a drop-off or pick-up, drivers can exit through one of the many available lanes. These are applicable at the following:
KLIA Terminal 1 Departure (Level 5)
KLIA Terminal 1 Arrival (Level 3)
KLIA Terminal 2 Departure (Level 3)
KLIA Terminal 2 Arrival (Level 2)
For those who wish to park a little longer, you may use the Short-Term Car Park (STCP) at KLIA Terminal 1, conveniently located adjacent to and connected with the Main Terminal Building. Parking for the first 15 minutes of parking is free, and there are over 5,000 bays available across Blocks A, B, and C for your convenience.
For extended stays, we recommend using the Long-Term Car Park (LTCP) located near the Malaysia Airports Academy. Parking is free for the first 30 minutes, and the facility offers more than 5,000 parking bays. A complimentary shuttle service runs between the LTCP and the terminals every 10 minutes for easy access.
Part of Malaysia’s smart airport vision
Beyond easing congestion, VAMS marks a major step forward in Malaysia Airports’ vision to create a smart, data-driven airport ecosystem. Powered by AI and real-time monitoring, the system not only enhances travellers’ experience but also supports long-term traffic management planning.
By analysing vehicle entry and exit data, airport operators can identify traffic patterns, optimise kerbside operations, and improve the deployment of traffic marshals and support staff. This contributes to safer traffic conditions and faster response times during peak hours.
VAMS reflects Malaysia Airports commitment to innovation, safety, and service excellence, strengthening the country’s position as a world-class aviation hub.So, plan your drop-off or pick-up ahead, follow the on-site signs, and let the system do the rest.
