Whenever there’s a medical emergency, on screen or in real life, someone always shouts, “Is there a doctor around?” That instinctive call reflects a universal truth: in such moments, we turn to doctors for help.

Healthcare remains essential everywhere, and skilled professionals will always be in demand. If you’re considering a career in medicine, here’s why Taylor’s University might just be the right place to begin your journey.

A Programme Designed for Tomorrow’s Doctors

The Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme at Taylor’s University is divided into two distinct phases:

Phase 1 (Years 1 & 2): Foundation in Medical Sciences

Students will gain a solid grounding in medical sciences while being introduced to the fundamentals of clinical practice.

Phase 2 (Years 3 to 5): Clinical Rotations

This is where theory meets practice. Students will undergo immersive clinical rotations at accredited teaching hospitals and healthcare centres, working directly with patients across various clinical disciplines, including Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, and Paediatrics, among others under the supervision of experienced clinicians.

To support international ambitions, the programme also offers overseas clinical electives and preparation for international medical licensing examinations through multiple e-learning resources—promoting both independent and lifelong learning.

Beyond its comprehensive curriculum, the true value of the MBBS programme is reflected in the inspiring paths taken by its graduates—each carving out a unique contribution to the world of healthcare.

Charting an Unconventional Course in Medicine and Public Health

Meet Dr Angus Ong Qi Chwen, Class of 2021 alumnus, whose journey has taken him from medical school to the forefront of digital health research.

“Although the MBBS programme was relatively new at the time, I chose Taylor’s University because of its strong reputation for quality education and its affiliation with some of the busiest tertiary hospitals in Malaysia. The exposure to diverse medical conditions and patients from both urban and rural settings was a key factor for me,” said Dr Angus.

During his time at Taylor’s University, Dr Angus was deeply inspired by the faculty’s emphasis on empathy, purpose, and evidence-based medicine, values that would shape his career.

He recalls following through the care of an elderly patient with poorly controlled hypertension and diabetes, whose challenges went beyond medication adherence. Her case highlighted the need for continuity of care and system-level solutions—fuelling his interest in preventive care and digital tools to bridge healthcare gaps.

This foundation encouraged Dr Angus to pursue an unconventional path as a research associate at a public research university, focusing on digital health research to improve chronic disease management.  Now completing his Master of Public Health, he is set to begin his Doctor of Philosophy studies at a leading research university in the United Kingdom—reflecting both the strong foundation built through the MBBS programme and his commitment to advancing healthcare through research and innovation.

While Dr Angus' journey reflects innovation and advocacy, Dr Nicole's experience offers a grounded perspective from the clinical frontlines.

Beyond the Textbooks: A Journey Through Hands-On Medical Education

Dr Nicole Gan Wei Wei, Class of 2024 alumnus, during her internship at a public hospital.

“When I attended Taylor’s Open Day, I was impressed by the facilities and how approachable the lecturers were. The programme trained us to think like doctors, not just exam-takers. Early exposure to ward rounds, shadowing senior housemen, and making quick decisions gave me a head start as a houseman,” she said.

Dr Nicole’s passion for paediatrics was ignited early on, shaped by hands-on experiences during clinical rotations and the guidance of inspiring faculty with deep expertise in the field.

Her most memorable moments went beyond operating theatres and ward rounds. It was during community postings and rotations like Psychiatry, where she engaged with patients recovering from schizophrenia—that she began to see medicine as more than treating symptoms. It became about understanding people as a whole person.

Balancing Science, Skills, and Humanitarian Values

Associate Professor Dr Ganesh Ramachandran shares that the MBBS programme integrates on scientific knowledge, clinical skills and humanitarian values to produce doctors who are truly fit for purpose.

“At Taylor’s, we offer a comprehensive educational experience designed to nurture competent, safe, and empathetic doctors who are strong team players with problem-solving and critical thinking abilities—core attributes that are reflected in the success of our graduates across diverse healthcare settings,” said Associate Professor Dr Ganesh Ramachandran, Head of the School of Medicine, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, Taylor’s University.

The pathways available to MBBS graduates are equally varied and dynamic. Many alumni pursue clinical careers, while others branch into academia, healthcare management or delve into the medico legal field by specialising in Medical Law. A growing number are also exploring the expanding landscape of Aesthetic and Wellness Medicine, which demands formal training and evidence-based practice as well.

A Degree That Makes a Difference

For school leavers and pre-university students eyeing a future in medicine, Taylor’s University offers more than just a degree. It’s a transformative journey grounded in “Humanity in Medicine”, where the patient is always the focus—even as you embrace high technology clinical solutions, digital tools, research, and innovation.
