Child protection has always been mooted as a priority for the Malaysian government. After all, Rosmah Mansor once famously reminded everyone, “Children are the nation’s foundation, and the needs of civilisation’s sustainability. They are valuable assets to nation building, helping to realize our vision and to shape the nation’s future growth and progress.”

The Perak Tengah District Council has taken it upon themselves to assume the role of ‘moral police’ to curb social ills by curbing the sales of ‘couple love seats’ in a Lotus Five Star (LFS) cinema in Bandar Seri Iskandar, Perak.

There is a fine line between audacity and idiocy; and yesterday Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak dangerously crossed that line. There is an old Arab proverb which states “Arrogance diminishes wisdom”, and as a leader much like yourself, you must be made fully accountable for the things you said and the people whom you may hurt in the process.

DAP made Malaysian history last month, by setting a minimum 30 percent women’s quota at the  central executive committee (CEC) level. Many regard this as a positive step that will encourage more women to participate in politics, especially at decision-making levels.

Interestingly, the media tends to work up a frenzy every time a Malay woman joins DAP. Most recently, Melati Rahim - a niqab donning activist, announced her membership and in less than 24 hours, the vicious attacks ensued with hell-bent fervour.

COMMENT In times of uncertainty and crisis, wise leaders needed sorely.
