The CEO leads business operations at Mkini Group. The goal of the CEO is to ensure sufficient financial strength to meet its ongoing mission and its short and medium-term goals, as agreed and supported by the Board of Directors.
The CEO achieves this by recruiting and managing key department heads, allocating sufficient resources across the organisation, and ensuring that the strategic direction takes into account market dynamics, opportunities and competition so as to meet performance targets.
The CEO works with key department heads to maintain the organizational culture and values that reflect the Mkini brand. Working with the CFO, the CEO ensures financial accountability and regulatory adherence. The CEO supports the Chief Membership Officer and the Chief Commercial Officer to ensure revenue targets are met. The CEO works closely with the Chief Technology Officer and Chief Product Officer to ensure Malaysiakini’s technology products support the editorial, membership and advertising departments.
As Malaysiakini’s editorial team is lead by the Editor-in-Chief, the CEO does not carry editorial responsibilities.
The ideal CEO candidate is a Malaysian with strong experience in digital technologies, marketing or sales, and human resource management. He or she is able to gain the trust of a small group of managers in a fast-paced organization, leading through strategic thinking, empathetic relationships, ethical leadership and an unwavering commitment to independent journalism.
Candidates have to be comfortable with the challenges of a medium-sized enterprise with limited resources. Teamwork, competency, and commitment deliver results, rather than dependency on corporate processes.
The recruitment process has several stages, including being selected for a shortlist and being approved by the senior managers and the board.
