Ten points for better schools, better students

Now that the dust has settled, it's imperative for the new education minister and his staff to get to work on our ‘neither-here-nor-there' education system. Here are a few suggestions and I hope someone is listening.

1. Have the courage to establish a ‘1 School' system where all children come together to learn and mix. Yes, abolish or merge the rest. This is beyond politics and nobody should capitalise on it.

2. Bahasa Malaysia should be our medium of instruction and communication but Maths and Science should remain in English for obvious reasons. ‘Agama', Mandarin and Tamil should be made compulsory subjects (points -scoring too) for the respective diverse students.

3.Replace Islamic recitals with Rukun Negara by both the students and teachers.

4. Any teacher/student who are racists/bullies must be transferred out immediately without fear or favour

5.Teachers, please really teach - not just come into class and ask the students to do their own things or give out a lot of homework.

6. Lessen homework but have more stimulating teaching please. Not all parents jump with joy seeing how much homework a student brings home everyday.

7.Clean up all those dirty toilets. How could we allow our precious little ones to use these horrifying places 365 days a year where we adults won't step in even for a minute.

8.Offer a wide selection of nutritious foods in the canteen. Not all kids can stomach spicy, oily foods. Almost all schools offer these non-nutritious foods - roti canai, hot dogs, plain fried noodles, yong tau foo, burgers, plain nasi lemak, etc.

Somehow, the teachers always get a different, exciting variety. And please replace those dirty canteen operators no matter how well they serve the teachers. The kids' well-being is paramount.

9.Replace the school uniforms with a cotton-based type. Pity those kids in the sun for 365 days a year. Try wearing one yourself.

10. Perhaps get help from Western countries to teach English to our students and teachers alike.
