I refer to the Malaysiakini report Audit: PKFZ cost to balloon up to RM12bil .
Kudos to our beloved PM and his Cabinet in giving their approval to release the PcW's report on PKFZ in its entirety.
Leadership as a prime minister is a privilege and it carries responsibilities from choosing cabinet members suitable to the nation's purpose to forming a team of people which brings out the best in each other.
Further, the cabinet has to be courageous and decisive in making the right decisions in the interest of the nation. I firmly believe the release of the PcW report is due to he PM's unwavering belief in the welfare of our country and its people.
Much speculation has been ventilated on the financial debacle of the PKFZ project. The report has, to an extent, calmed the storm. Some, if not most of the weaknesses, anxieties and fears that have plagued this potentially astronomical financial disaster have been identified.
If these problems are not arrested and resolved quickly, the grave financial burden will be reposed on the shoulders of the the rakyat.
A perusal of the report exposes blatant abuses of power and reckless disregard of existing governmental procedures and guidelines. There is obvious dereliction of corporate responsibilities and good governance.
Transport Minister Ong Tee Keat has directed PKA to submit a copy of the report to the MACC and PAC. Tee Keat is quoted to have said, ‘It has been a long journey for me personally. It is one that is fraught with challenges and hurdles both from within and without'.
Being the only surviving (politically) MCA parliamentarian in Selangor after the 2008 general election, Tee Keat has recognised that the office of MP and minister is a sacred trust. He has internalised the responsibility to uphold transparency, accountability and good governance to protect the image of the BN government and the interests of the rakyat.
I am convinced that Tee Keat has not climbed that long ladder to be a minister and MCA president without proving himself every inch of the way. His uprightness and integrity have been proven again and again in his actions and his work in the public domain.
His dogged determination to uphold government's commitment to be transparent and accountable is an asset to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and our nation.
To me, with Najib at the helm, change has arrived. His leadership requires him to make tough choices about processes and people. The release of the PcW report is just one instance. Some personalities involved in the PKFZ project will definitely be hopping mad.
Be that as it may, these personalities must be mindful by the oft quoted Stephen Covey advice: ‘While they may be free to choose their action, they are not free to choose the consequences of their action'.
The MACC and the PAC must stay above the fray and act without fear and favour in pursuing justice. The guilty parties must be prosecuted.
Justice must not only be done but must seen to be done. It is hoped that the end result of their investigations shall improve Malaysia's standing in the Corruption Perception Index.
