The wily Lee Kuan Yew made a lightning visit to Malaysia and met many Malaysian leaders.
Don't be surprised if we read in the news in the not too distant future that Singapore may consider returning to the fold or some other significant development.
Those who think Lee met those leaders to gauge the mood of the country must be naive. The Singapore spies are everywhere and their intelligence can be relied upon to provide essential facts about the country. Lee need not have checked things out for himself, if indeed that was the purpose of his visit.
What can be learned from his meetings that would make the difference? Only Lee and his close circle would know his real reason(s) for the visit.
If there was a glaring act of omission on his part, or even a gaffe of protocol, it was that he did not bother to meet opposition leader, Lim Kit Siang.
He also did not visit anyone from Sabah or Sarawak. Also the snub for Mahathir also spoke volumes for the man's disrespect for the country's longest serving leader, and perhaps a spent political force that Lee can ignore.
Lee should have also met with NGOs and others who have a stake in the country, if, in fact, he was on a fact-finding mission. What facts he gathered from his trip would only be the view from the top. But that is classic Lee. He does not think much of those who pose a check and balance to the powers-that-be.
Perhaps he may have been surprised to learn that Malaysia despite its police state, is still more tolerant of dissent than in his island state. Whatever the purpose of his visit, it is always in Singapore's interest to be on good terms with Malaysian leaders.
And for his initiative, Lee is to be commended though we're somewhat suspicious of his motives.
As for the Rosmah meeting, it is all part of the show. Would he not be meeting her when he met Najib? So why the special meeting?
Is he hinting that Najib's ‘1Malaysia’ should be ‘1LadyMalaysia’? That explains it then. Malaysians should not be confused about what ‘1Malaysia’ stands for anymore. Any elected leader that allows his wife or husband to dictate government policy does not deserve to have the office.
People elect politicians into office - not their wives. If a leader discloses official secrets to his wife during pillow talk, then he is breaking the trust he has been given.
A politician's family should not be privy to government secrets though it is normal to have some sort of discussion and family members may try to influence the politician in the family.
Why did Lee make a fuss of visiting all those people in one trip? I don't know. Maybe like Mahathir, former national leaders are addicted to publicity and can't bear being ignored.
