PKFZ: C'mon, don't slam gov't for slamming's sake

I refer to the Malaysiakini report Twists and hysteria: Tee Keat hits back .

From the time I can remember, the opposition has been opposing government projects, big and small, just for the sake of opposing.

For example, during the Dewarn Rakyat sitting on Monday, Lim Kit Siang kept interrupting the Transport Minister Ong Tee Keat who was delivering his ministerial statement.

A seasoned politician like Lim should know that under the Standing Orders, there are no provisions to question the minister during the ministerial statement. But dis Kit Siang care?

He doesn't because he just want to make a scene and put boulders in the path of national development.

When Dr Mahathir Mohamad proposed to build the North-South Expressway in the 1980s to link up the West Coast states and speed up the country's industrialisation efforts, people like Kit Siang opposed it vehemently.

When the government wanted to build the Penang Bridge, the DAP claimed it was a waste of money. But now that DAP controlls Penang, it is now asking the government to speed up the construction of the Second Bridge connecting the island to the mainland!

Fierce opposition was also seen to the government's plans in the 1990s to build the Petronas Twin Towers, the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Putrajaya - but they all turned out to be national prides.

The DAP even opposed the National Service programme although many parents have given it the thumbs-up.

Sure, in some of these projects or programmes, there were teething problems. For example, there was a major glitch on the day KLIA began operations which raised the ire of Mahathir who was on board the first flight out of the airport in Sepang.

In the inaugural National Service programme, the government was left red-faced when many trainees could not get to their training camps due to a mis-communication between the National Service Department and the bus operators who were supposed to ferry them there.

But the government resolved all these and moved ahead. And now, we can hold our heads high when we fly from the KLIA, cross the Penang Bridge, drive past the Twin Towers or see our kids grow in confidence after their National Service stint.

I believe the same goes for the PKFZ. Like other major national projects, some mistakes were made in the past. I think it took a lot of courage for the NajibAbdul Razak-led administration to own up to these misdeeds.

Credit must also be given to Ong. It took even more resolve and grit to turn the transshipment project around. And I think we should give the government credit when it is due.

As for people like Lim Kit Siang, I think the government can only thank him. That's because every time he opens his mouth to criticise the government's national projects, they turn out to be huge successes in their own rights.
