I am one of the pioneer members of Keadilan when the party was launched in 1999. I am still a strong follower of Keadilan and was impressed with the party's recent merger with PRM to form Parti Keadilan Rakyat (Keadilan), and their multiracial concept.
In order for Keadilan to emerge as the stronger opposition, the party should first of all allow more people to know about the party's struggle, its objectives and also the leaders of Keadilan beside Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and Dr Syed Husin Ali.
The easiest way is by creating a homepage for PKR. I am very disappointed to note that there are no websites for Keadilan or PRM, as compared to PAS and DAP. The only Keadilan website is Pemuda Keadilan's which is not accessible since two weeks ago.
If the majority of Malaysians are unable to follow the news of PKR despite their excitement about the new multiracial party then how can PKR be able to offer an alternative to the present Barisan Nasional?
Although I am not a supporter of PAS but to their credit, the party is well organised. We just have to look at their websites and the party's newspaper Harakah . PAS' activities and news are updated daily. The same applies to DAP.
Wake up Keadilan! The party is full of potential, do the basic things and let more people know you. As a Keadilan member, I am hungry for more news. How Keadilan's organisational chart looks, who are their leaders in the respective states and divisions. Until and unless Keadilan is able to resolve this problem, I am afraid to say despite the potential in the newly-merged party, it will not go far.
As for Keadilan's ongoing fight with DAP, I would like to suggest the party going alone without DAP. Politics is about surviving and sometime we have to give and take and if DAP insists on contesting all the Chinese majority areas then Keadilan will have no choice but to go along.
I am not saying Keadilan is stronger or DAP is stronger in Chinese areas, but I would say almost equal. We just have to look at the results from the Gaya by-election and Sarawak state elections.
Although DAP has always pointed out that Keadilan lost their deposit in Gaya, the fact is DAP fared equally bad - maybe with few hundreds more votes than Keadilan but DAP has to remember that their party has been in existence much more longer than Keadilan. Considering this, Keadilan actually performed better than DAP.
The same applies in Sarawak, I still remember Keadilan's candidate in Kuching beating DAP's candidate by a wide margin in the last general election despite DAP maintaining that Kuching is their traditional seat.
My advise to both parties is continue to negotiate if they would like to see an increase in opposition seats at the next general election. Any three-cornered fight will only benefit BN and ultimately PAS and will only spell disaster for both Keadilan and DAP. For DAP, even if Keadilan is able to split 30 percent of opposition votes, it is enough for DAP to lose all their seats.
