I refer to the Malaysiakini report Umno on road to reform, vows Najib .
Will this ever be true for Malaysia? US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in an interview recently, speaks of her appointment to President Obama’s cabinet.
‘So, at the end of the day, when your president asks you to serve, you say yes, if you can’.
Clinton said that while traveling around the world she still gets asked how she could work with a former political adversary.
‘Politics in many developing democracies is still so personal. People can't fathom how you could be an opponent one day and then a colleague the next day’.
During the interview, Clinton repeatedly stated that she had no designs on the White House after finishing her time as Secretary of State.
Three marks of a mature democracy:
1. The executive and government of the day is guided by the constitution which is a sacred document respected by all.
2. The government continues on irregardless of which political party wins. The sxecutive represents all irregardless of political affiliations.
3. There are clear divisions of authority and branches of government - the executive, judiciary and the legislature.
Malaysia is on her journey towards greater democracy and we are now going through the birth pangs. Whether or not you favour Pakatan Rakyat or are happy with them is not relevant.
What is relevant now is that there is a possibility of a two-coalition system which shall bring about greater checks and balance.
With a two-coalition system, Malaysia is on its way to being a mature democracy.
Vote Pakatan Rakyat into the federal government at the next general election and bring about the end of a single-coalition system under which the rakyat is held to ransom at each and every election.
