I read with disgust at the latest news that Wangsa Maju MP Wee Choo Keong has finally quit PKR.

Such an act is a betrayal of the Wangsa Maju electorate who elected him on a PKR ticket. If Wee has any honour left in him, he should just resign from his seat and re-contest with dignity as an independent candidate.

To give the excuse that that he had resigned because of the way PKR and the Selangor state government had handled the alleged corruption scandal involving a state-owned mining company is a lame one.

The Selangor menteri besar has given his assurances to Kapar MP S Manikavasagam that he has nothing to fear as the state government would be investigating the allegation. It boggles my mind as to how a single matter can prompt the Wangsa Maju MP to just throw in the towel and declare  that he is 'disappointed' with the leadership and becoming an independent MP.

It only shows up his lack of leadership in the matter, by his sheer cowardice in not wanting to fight corruption as alleged by him in the first place. How is he going to perform his duties as an independent MP with a clear conscience when he has not received any mandate by the Wangsa Maju voters on that platform?

If he had been a BN candidate in the March 2008 elections, he would have lost. The people did not vote for him because he is Wee Choo Keong but because he was part of Pakatan Rakyat.

There is no point talking about ‘change’ when there is no will to change our mindsets and walk the talk. Politicians need to change their mindset of blaming others, except themselves. Otherwise, there will never be ‘change’ in this country in fighting corruption as long as they find the easy way out in blaming others and becoming ‘independent’.

A country cannot be governed by ‘independents’ in fighting corruption. There is no record of any country being ruled by neutral or independent MPs. Neutrality as an independent MP is a mockery of democracy, when they were never elected on that platform.

It should never be an option to suit one’s whims and fancies and satisfy their personal egos, when MPs blatantly deny the democratic right of voters to choose a representative of their preferred political platform.

For Wee Choo Keong to claim that there was a ‘cover up’ on the alleged corruption issue involving the state-owned mining company, it only proves that there was a blatant ‘cover up’ on his part when there were already rumours flying around three weeks ago that he would be quitting PKR. Was there such an issue back then, when he shamelessly denied that he would be quitting PKR?

It is no surprise then when he announced his decision to quit PKR, especially when such resignation happen during 'buy-elections'.
