What crime has Seksualiti Merdeka committed?

I am quite angry that the police are wasting so much of their precious man hours, paid by the rakyat's money, MY tax money, to harass the organisers of Seksualiti Merdeka when so much crime has been taking place in the country, both by petty criminals in the cities, and by high level politicians as highlighted almost daily.

Good example are the gangsters that allegedly beat up a group of young Indian kids in Setapak recently. No action? Of course not, the cops are busy with Seksualiti Merdeka. Why? You got me.

What crime exactly are the police basing their probe on? Has any offence been done by simply holding a forum on sexuality rights? Has acts of free sex been documented at the event - wait, the event hasn't even started yet.

So where is the crime? Did the organisers go and tell people to commit sodomy? That, as far as I know, is the only crime remotely related to this.

Seksualiti Merdeka however is not about sodomy, it is about human beings, Malaysians, overcoming their challenges.

Being LGBT is not a crime. Sodomy is. According to the archaic English law that the anti colonialist Malaysian government, hold so dear.

They changed all the English road names, but they have retained an archaic law that, for the umpteenth time, makes anyone regardless of sexual preference liable.

It is heartening to see so many enlightened comments in support of Seksualiti Merdeka in the past weeks, as compared to a lot of gay bashing in past years even by normally progressive, intelligent commentators.

The issue of sexuality rights relates to the rights of GLBT to live as any other citizen, and not to live in fear or shame.

GLBT do not need to live their lives according to the dictates of heterosexuals. This has nothing to do with religion.

This touches on a reply to my previous letter about gays healing themselves, no, it is not about "healing" them into heterosexuals, but healing the years of self-hate, insecurity, trauma of being ostracised and different, and regain their self dignity that they are not sinners and outcasts. That being different is just a trait, no stranger than differing hair colour or eye colour.

In terms of religion, as I said, not every religion treats it as a sin. And you forget that atheists too do not believe in a God that judges, but that one's own actions are the judge.

All of these are relevant and of equal weight in any society, regardless of how supreme one group thinks his religion is. That is the true meaning of religious freedom.

In this respect I take offence with Mr Koya's letter "why not call it LGBTPM...". For someone claiming to be a scholar, he is still using an archaic argument of the 80s, grouping LGBT with paedophiles, murderers, thieves etc.

This is the 21st century, Mr Koya, people are far more educated and enlightened by now.

What you are saying is like me saying heterosexuals are rapists, wifebeaters, child molesters, adulterers, as well as thieves and conmen.

Proof? Look at the rape statistics, and adultery statistics. Don't they show heterosexuals are sinners and sex perverts? Remember the Obedient Wives Club? Seksualiti Merdeka is bad, but OWC is alrtight?

If that is the level of discourse our academics are capable of, then we are a long, long way from being a first world nation, not to say third world.

In Southeast Asia alone, the discussion on sexuality has far advanced, even in the largest Muslim country in the world, Indonesia. Malaysia, sadly, is still stuck in the BN sponsored dark ages.
