In the words of Anne Klein, ‘Democracy is not just the right to vote, it's the right to live in dignity'.

As a first-time voter, I came into the elections all excited and ready to rumble. My parents in their sixties were hopeful because they could see that glimpse of fresh hope for their one-year-old grandson.

My brother volunteered because in his opinion, a better government was in near sight.

People were listening and speaking up.

Like most countries which underwent political reforms recently, politics have become a two-way conversation. Malay, Chinese, Indian, Iban - your race didn't matter, your voice did.

And for those who have left, no distance was great enough to stop us from making things right.

I won't deny the sprinkle of pessimism, having witnessed how politics have churned out in the past four years.

Still, there was hope. After all, there's always a light at the end of the tunnel. Dimana ada kemahuan, di situ ada jalan. ( Where there's a will, there's a way.)

We held on to the belief that every vote counts, not only because we were taught the concept in school with our Sejarah textbooks, but also because we placed our trust in the leaders and the constitution, that have led us to where we are today for over five decades.

But on May 5, 2013, we were ridiculed and fooled like nobody's business. And my only question to these people who weren't on the receiving end is, ‘Are you kidding me?'

Forget about the ‘cheating allegations' and Copperfield tricks, I do not even care if you were celebrating ‘Earth Hour' for a split second.

All I care about is the fact that you owe us all an apology. You owe my parents a hopeful future for their grandson. You undermined our intelligence and education, and please don't forget we came from your schools and the education system you built.

You brought in foreigners overnight to vote in my constituencies when my Malaysian friends get turned away simply because "permohonon anda tidak akan diproses sehingga bulan Jun".

If you were decent enough you'd know that you owe us a ‘sorry' for not having the respect to hear us out in a democratic country. And that's what we should be pissed about.

Cut the crap, gentlemen. Shove your money where your mouth is. If you proclaim democracy, walk your talk. You did something wrong, own up to your mistakes regardless of what they are.

Don't treat us like fools, like we know nothing. Don't blatantly blindside us like we never went to school. You made Pendidikan Moral compulsory in SPM, so practice it. I'd quote Russell Peters right now (Be a man. Do the right thing!) if I was trying to be funny, but this is no funny business.

This is Malaysia, a supposedly democratic nation. We were told to be a proud nation for being multi-racial but peaceful, small but resourceful.

We are thankful a million times we are nowhere near Saddam's tyranny or al-Assad's dictatorship, but please don't take that gratitude for granted.

So Mr Prime Minister, I believe you owe us all an apology. That's the very least you can do for us disappointed Malaysians right now.

And just so we're clear, it wasn't a ‘Chinese tsunami'. It was a Malaysian tsunami.
