In recent weeks, many malaysiakini readers have written in to criticise Anglican Church leaders for being narrow minded about their rejection of homosexuality and the appointment of Rev Gene Robinson as a bishop in the United States.

I can assure those readers that a large majority of Christians in America were appalled by the cavalier manner in which the leadership of the two million Episcopalians have sidelined biblical teaching in order to admit this profane man into this post.

There is no confusion in the Bible about the requirements of a bishop:

"An elder must be blameless, the husband of but one wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient." (Titus Chapter 1 verses 6-8)

The Bible requires the man to be the husband of a wife, not another man. Gene Robinson has not only left his lawfully-wedded wife for another person but engaged in homosexuality, thus failing to be 'self-controlled'.

If he had repented of these sins, he can be accepted by God but he clearly wanted to justify his continued relationship, thus bringing condemnation upon himself.

Homosexuality is a sin for which God requires repentance, not the glossing over that is advocated by malaysiakini letter writer Gospel of Love. Neither have the terms changed over the years as asserted by Adek.

Both writers claim to refer to the Bible but they err in the context of 'compassion'. Christ calls on all people to repent and He does not advocate anyone to continue living in sin. The term 'homosexual' was described in the King James as "effeminate, abusers of themselves with mankind" which meant the same in old English.

No man can kill another for his practice of homosexuality but it cannot be tolerated within the Church. Such a person will have to be expelled from the congregation, not to be allowed to pollute the values of future generations of Christians:

"Expel the wicked man from among you." (1 Corinthians Chapter 5 verse 13b)

While Christ preached 'love' in the context of spiritual agape love, He did not gloss over the sinful nature of man and the need to repent from sinful practices. This is basic biblical teaching and it has not changed over the centuries.

It is only that modern lesbian and gay groups try to justify their sinful lifestyles while wanting to retain the label of 'Christian' in a vain hope that the Almighty will somehow exempt them from eternal judgment.

Look, if one cannot accept the core teachings of the Bible on sexual immorality including the gay lifestyle, one does not have to be a Christian or pretend to be one.

There are many New Age cults out there that will willingly accept gays and lesbians. Just know that God has given His rules about sexual immorality and the consequences of such behaviour within the Church.
